Charlie's POVIt was the 4th of July, and the boys and I had planned to go to the sandlot whilst the fireworks were going off, just like every other year. This year we had Smalls coming with us too, and boy was I excited to see his face when he saw the superb bursts of color lighting up the sky whilst we played the best game of ball ever. It was a beautiful thing to witness, and that's why it was my favourite night of the year.
This year though, my mom decided it was about time I started acting more ladylike, and so she bought me this beautiful dress and she's making me wear it tonight. Although the dress is pretty and fits me perfectly in all the right places, I felt as if it wasn't the best thing to play baseball in. Never mind felt, I knew I wouldn't be able to play in it without one of the boys getting a peak up my skirt.
As I admired myself in the mirror, trying to decide wether I liked the dress or not, I was also fighting the urge to take out my curly, pinned-up hair and just throw a cap on top. I decided not to though, my mom had spent an hour preparing my hair and putting a bit of makeup on my face, and would be upset if I just threw that all away. I'll leave the hair, but unfortunately the red lipstick will have to go later on because there is ABSOLUTELY no way I'm not eating one of those delicious hot dogs Hams mom makes. They are so good.
Suddenly, I was ripped away from my stupid overthinking by my mom as she shouted for me to come downstairs.
"Charlotte! Darling, come down here and take these muffins outside, will ya?" She yelled up the stairs.
I sighed, but put on my blue converses (that went perfectly with the dress). They didn't complete cover the frills on the new socks my mom bought, bummer.
I trotted down the stairs, my hair bouncing, making me feel like Marilyn Monroe in one of photoshoots.
"Coming, Ma. Mmm, those muffins smell amazing." I drooled whilst walking through the hallway. It was true, my mother really did make some amazing chocolate chip muffins, and boy, did they taste good. I used to eat tons upon tons a few years back, when I had no self contr-
"Mmhm, they sure do." Somebody suddenly whispered in my ear, scaring the life out of me and making me yelp loudly.
"Oh my god, Benny, you idiot! You could've given me a heart attack!" Pouting slightly, I snuggled my face into his neck to avoid being teased about how red I was. I was so embarrassed!
He stiffens up slightly, but then relaxes at my touch, and wraps his arms around my waist. "Sorry," he chuckles, "I didn't think you'd get that scared."
"Come on, Charlie, what's taking you so long- oh, hello Benjamin." My mom smirks, raising her eyebrow at us both. I immediately let go of Benny, and he let's go of me, just as embarrassed as I was that we'd be caught cuddling by my mom.
"Hi Lillie. Those muffins smell great." Benny smiles nervously at my mom, Lillie.
"Why, thank you. Now you two come in here and help me carry them outside to where everyone else is."
"Sure."
Benny's POV
After we'd helped Lillie with the muffins, we went and picked up Squints, and afterwards we met up the the rest of the guys. Now we were running through the streets, sizzlers popping off everywhere we went.
Charlie was if front of me, her black hair getting messed up as she ran to the sandlot, waving around just a freely as her.
When we arrived, she shotgunned catcher, and Ham surprisingly didn't put up a fight, just throwing her the mask and jogging to his new place.
As everyone got in position, I turned round to Charlie, who had only just realised she'd have a hard time being catcher with a dress on. Her underwear would be on show.
"It don't matter, Char, I'm gunna hit a homer anyway." I smirked, yet as I did so I felt nervous. She looked gorgeous.
When she nodded, I got into position, fingers wrapped tightly around the bat.
DeNunez threw the ball and I whacked it as hard as I could.
Homerun. Fireworks went off, as if celebrating for me, and all the boys turned their attention to the display.
Despite that, I still ran the bases, making my way back to Charlotte, who was staring right at me as I ran, took off her catchers mask, smudging her lipstick slightly.
I made it to her, looked down upon her pretty face, which was lit up by the colourful fireworks, and wiped the lipstick smudge off the side of her lip.
As she blushed slightly and looked up at me in awe, I leaned down towards her. And as the final, biggest firework went off,
I kissed her.
