CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
THE WORLD AROUND HER WAS STILL NOTHING BUT AN INKY SHADOW CONSUMING HER, and for a moment she was unsure what was unconsciousness and what was not. When she gained the ability to distinguish what was happening, she scrambled up from where she was lying on the ground and immediately checked the spot where she had last seen Clarke and Finn. Nothing.A throbbing pain spread through her skull, making her squint her eyes and clutch the sides of her head with both hands. "Clarke? Finn? Myles?" she croaked out, hearing nothing and still seeing not a thing but the towering trees around her.
Burying her face in the hands that had clutched the sides of her head just a few seconds ago, she wiped away the angry tears that threatened to spill. Standing up, she felt dizzy, but regained some bearing on her stance after a moment. The hit had definitely disoriented her, but she didn't think it was a concussion.
Stumbling toward the place where she had watched Clarke and Finn fall before the Grounders, she felt a hopeless feeling digging in her chest. How could she have let this happen? Tripping her way back, she decided that the destination now had to be camp. That was the only way that she was going to get any help for Clarke and Finn.
Everything appeared off in the dark, and she stumbled around for quite some time before she heard movement in the distance. A few dark figures roamed around between the shadows off to her left. She stopped dead in her tracks and hastily found the nearest tree, positioning herself behind it. For good measure, she covered her mouth so that nobody could hear her heavy breaths.
After waiting what she deemed an appropriate amount of time for whoever was out there to move on from the area, she slowly peered around the curve of the tree. The figures hadn't moved any further away.
Taking a shaky breath, she propelled herself off of the back of the tree and bolted in the direction she was heading before. It wasn't the most subtle option nor the quietest — sticks cracked beneath her tired feet and hanging branches smacked her in the face sharply. She was unsure if the steps she could have sworn that she heard behind her was actually her being loud, her own paranoia, or someone following her.
At the point at which she felt like her legs might just fall off, the glowing lights of camp welcomed her back. Skidding to a halt at the gates, she snapped her head back and found that if someone was following her, then they had stopped a while ago. No shadows had followed her all the way back to her refuge.
She wasn't paying much attention to the voices in front of her when the gates opened at the sight of her disheveled form. When she glimpsed upward, Miller was approaching her apprehensively.
"Clarke — Finn — Grounders — took — they're — gone —" she gasped out roughly, her own voice startling her a bit. Her head was still pounding and she was still determined to get the message of her lost companions out to at least one person.
