Song: Everything Comes Back to You - Reid White
Meeting my friends in an ice cream parlour after school should help me. After confronting Elizabeth during third, I couldn't handle seeing her again. I knew she would've forced me to stay after class to talk and I didn't want to deal with that so I ditched. I shouldn't have but I had no other choice. Running away from my problems is a skill of mine.
"Hey Xena. Why weren't you at chem?" I hear Avalon's voice behind me. I turn around to see Kali alongside Avalon, each of them smiling but concerned.
"And why did you ask us to meet you here?" Kali asks before I get the chance to greet them. Laughing a bit awkwardly, I invite them to sit and Avalon welcomes herself to my ice cream.
"To answer you Avalon, I wasn't feeling well so I went home early." I'm not ready to tell them the truth.
"Oh sure. Were you with Ty? I saw you talking with him during lunch." Kali says, clearly not believing me. At least she doesn't suspect me of anything else.
"No, he's just a friend. He was editing my essay for English." I give a simple explanation which turns out to be the truth. He wasn't helpful at all but I needed the marks on my draft for a grade and I actually care in that class. I ended up having to make my own corrections in his handwriting but the teacher believed it anyway.
"Okay so why are we here if we aren't talking about Ty? That's what I assumed you wanted to see us about." Kali says, slouching back into the chair after learning that I wasn't having a crisis. I smile at my friends. They're so supportive and they're always down to drop everything and help me. I, of course, am the same.
One time in year 8, I walked out in the middle of a test to help Avalon after a break up. I got Saturday school but it was worth it. Long story short, I would do anything for my friends at the drop of a hat and they the same.
"I just wanted to see you guys. We've been so busy with school and it's been like two weeks since we were all together." I genuinely missed being with Kali and Avalon. We used to spend every afternoon together and now, senior year, when we're supposed to behaving the most fun, we're all caught up with early college applications and finals.
"Yeah I totally understand that. I thought we were never gonna hang out again." Avalon says through a mouthful of ice cream. She can have it, ice cream is too sweet for me.
"So how's life going for you guys?" I ask, wanting to make conversation with them. I feel like a middle aged woman catching up with her mum friends from book club. At least I get to know what's going on with my friends.
"Connor broke up with his girlfriend I think." I should've expected Avalon to say something about Connor. Kali and I don't make any sarcastic comments though, it's just nice to be talking again. Even if it is about Connor.
"Yeah I heard him talking about it earlier today. They broke up." Kali feeds Avalon's fantasy which I smile at. Avalon's face lights up and she gets excited.
"Awesome." She says, trying to control herself. Both Kali and I can see how excited she really is. We exchange an amused glance and laugh. Avalon laughs too, completely unaware the we were laughing at her.
Uninterested in the conversation that I started, I let my mind wander away from the subject. Connor is great, but not an entertaining topic. Although I can't blame Avalon. If it were okay for me to have a crush on a female teacher I would talk about her even more than Avalon talks about Connor. Wouldn't it be awesome if it was just accepted that women are attracted to women. And men attracted to men? Only in a perfect world. Thinking about it, I wonder if everyone has a gay phase.
