Song: Just Tell Me - Nico Yaryan
At lunch with Kali and Avalon, it's becoming apparent that winter is approaching. For one thing, finals is one week away and the chatter around the school has become even more depressing than usual. The wind is picking up as well, I even had to wear a jacket today. I hate being cold so I'm not looking forward to this winter season. I only have a few finals to take this year which is nice, only four.
One of which is for chemistry. Although Avalon is freaking out, I'm fairly confident in my abilities. Elizabeth keeps teasing me and saying that she'll fail me on purpose if I keep dodging her girlfriend request. I'm quite sure of what I want to answer her with but there's several things stopping me.
Not only is it illegal to date my teacher but it's also illegal to be in relations with a 25 year old while I'm still a minor. For my third and final anxiety, I'm also a female and everyone I know is unwelcoming of gay people, including my best friends as far as I'm aware. Kali and Avalon haven't explicitly stated that they're one side or the other but Avalon's made it pretty clear that she finds women unattractive. I love the thought of being Elizabeth's girlfriend but there are too many obstacles. Despite this, however, when she asks again, I'm saying yes. There, now it's out so I have to do it.
"Why are you smiling?" Kali says through a mouthful of food. When I look up, she's looking at me so I assume she's asked me. I hadn't even realised I was smiling.
"Just thinking about how close we are to Christmas break. Eleven whole days away from this place." I laminate my response with a large smile. Avalon nods in agreement whole swallowing her food in order to be polite before speaking, unlike some people.
"Yeah I can't wait. We have to hang out together like we do every year. Senior year can't be the year we slack off." Avalon laughs as she is reminded of all the past mistakes we've made that we call memories. Kali smiles as she takes another bite of her lunch and chuckles a little at our past selves.
"Do you remember when we egged your house in year ten?" Kali asks Avalon, this time covering her mouth but she's still chewing her food. Avalon nods and laughs a bit loudly.
"My mum could never figure out who did it." She said gleefully. That got a laugh out of me, I can't believe she never told her mum that it was us. I can't say I blame her, though. Her mum is quite strict with her, I can't imagine Avalon getting away from that talk without at least being grounded for a week. Her parents are a bit more lenient now that she's closer to adulthood but they're still very controlling of her.
"Shit she was like a detective on that. I remember she asked me who you were hanging out with almost every other day." Kali adds, looking over my shoulder at the entrance to the school. I turn around and see a boy walk away from the school. I've never seen him before, must be new. If I were a nice person, I'd invite him to sit with us but Avalon might die. I won't lie, he's good looking for a boy. He looks pretty similar to Connor but with longer hair.
When I turn back around to my friends, Avalon still has her eyes on the new kid. Kali nudges her shoulder and she snaps back to Earth with us. I smirk at Kali and we share a secret glance, knowing exactly what to do in order to tease Avalon.
"Avalon, stop staring at the new kid!" I yell louder than I needed to. Avalon hits my arm but I only look at Kali to make sure I'm getting the kid's attention. She gives me a keep going gesture and I continue. "I know you think he's cute but it's rude to stare." I say with the same loud voice. This time I turn around see the kid walking towards us. I glance back at Avalon and she's blushing hard.
