The next morning, Nyla's parents were surprised to see Richie and Lauren. They understood immediately when Nyla gave them a look.
"Okay, Richie, what kind of pancakes would you like?" Mrs. Jones asked.
"Chocolate chip, please."
"Of course. Lauren, dear?"
"Oh um, strawberries and whipped cream, please," Lauren said shyly.
"Good choice, that's my favorite. Chocolate chip, right, Nyla?"
"You know it."
"Breakfast will be ready in about 15 minutes."
"I'll set the table, you guys can sit down," Nyla said.

"Wanka wanka wanka," Gwen mumbled while walking her bike slowly beside Stan. He had invited her to bird watch with him since she was the closest one of the Losers to share his interest. They walked closer to the special clearance of the woods Stan loved.
"Okay, right here is my favorite spot." Stan propped his bike up. Then he crouched down in front of a log and placed his two books on it. One was for sketches and the other was a bird encyclopedia.
He layed out a blanket. Gwen sat criss-crossed on it, after dropping her bike, looking up at the trees. "Its so… peaceful here."
"I know, that's why I love it. Not a lot of people come here."
Stan was still getting situated when Gwen gasped and and pointed at the sky.
"Look!" she said in amazement. A brown, black, and gray bird streaked past.
"What were the colors?" Stan asked while quickly getting his pencil to jot down information.
"Gray, black, and brown," Gwen answered.
"That's a Chesnut-collared Longspur!"
"Did you memorize the whole encyclopedia?!"
"Yes," Stan said curtly, focusing on the sky.
An olive-green and gray bird with a long, rounded, white-tipped tail flew by slowly.
Instead of watching the birds, Gwen watched the way Stan's eyes lit up when he saw that bird, the way his eyes followed it in adoration, and the way he muttered, "brown; brown-gray; long, round tail; white tip...." as he wrote it down. "That was a Cassin's Sparrow."
Another bird soared across the sky. It was a pale gray on its belly, the throat was black with white stripes, the wings and tail were edged with an olive-yellow.
"Gwen? Would you say it was an olive-yellow or an orange-yellow?"
"Uuhhh, olive."
"And for the underbelly?"
"Pale gray."
"Thanks." Stan SMILED at her, then wrote that in his neat handwriting. He laid down, arms behind his head, ankles crossed. Gwen mimicked his position. "How is your brother?"
"He's uuuhhh... good," Gwen replied.
"What's your favorite bird?"
"The middle finger." Stan rolled his eyes.
"What's yours?" Gwen asked.
"For now, the Lark Bunting. But I hope to get out of this town and become an orinthologist."
"A what?"
"Or-in-thol-o-gist, bird scientist."
"Hmmm. I wanna get out of this town, too. Maybe become a musician or an actress."
