I sat up out of bed after a nightmare had consumed my dreams.
"What's the matter?" Legolas asked me. He sat up as well, rubbing my back soothingly.
"You know what."
His face fell. "I thought they'd stopped."
I shook my head and covered my face with my hands in defeat.
"You going to go back to sleep?" He asked worriedly.
"No." I was scared to sleep again.
I got up out of bed and pulled on my cloak.
"You want me to come with?"
"No, you need to rest. You were worried about me all that time, you deserve to sleep."
I stated, smiling and then leaving the room quietly.
I slowly walked through the hallways til I was outside by a waterfall.
The sound of the water drowned out the screams that had echoed through my head.
My eyes closed as I tried to clear my head, leaning against a stone wall.
"You couldn't sleep either?"
A small voice made me start with surprise.
Frodo stood there, looking exhausted and older than ever, even though he wasn't much older than me.
"No, I can't. It's the price of having lives like ours." I said sadly.
"I know." He replied tiredly.
He leaned against the wall with me.
"Why won't our dreams go away?" I asked.
Frodo looked up at me and then faced forward again.
"I think it's because they are a part of us now. Maybe they'll go away, maybe they won't. I guess it's our choice."
I elbowed his shoulder playfully. "When did you get so smart?"
"When did you get so happy?" He asked seriously.
My smile faded. "I don't know. I suppose I never had a reason. Now I do."
"And what's that?"
"You. And everyone else I know. I've learned to love again and to appreciate life." I told the truth, something I wasn't accustomed to.
I looked down at my hands.
Something shiny was glimmering just under the surface of my skin. What?!
I gasped and began to breath faster.
He looked at me quickly.
"Are you okay?"
I could feel my face getting more and more pale by the second.
"No. I-I think I need to go back now." I stuttered as I pushed myself off the wall to go back to my room.
"Oh, well good night." He said, staying against the wall.
"Uh-huh." I sprinted away.
Once out of sight, I stopped and put my hand out on a railing for support.
I looked at my hands again, but nothing was there.
My hands shook as I held them out in front of me.
What was happening to me?
"Katherine? Are you alright?"
Legolas walked up, looking tired but alert.
"N-n-n...." I tried to say no, but it wouldn't come out.
"Hey! Breath, darling." He held my shoulders for support as my heart raced and made me feel faint.
I blinked hard as my eyes finally focused on his face.
"I'm f-fine now." I whispered weakly.
"What happened?" His arms encircled my waist while we stood on a balcony that overlooked the valley.
"I saw something. Something under my skin. It was shining like gold and it frightened me."
"What?" His brows knitted together as he looked at me in confusion. "Are you sure it wasn't your imagination?"
"I'm positive. Something's inside of me, Legolas. And I don't know what to do."
I looked at him seriously.
He put his arm around my shoulders and we began walking back to my room.
"I don't know what to do either, Kat. We should tell Gandalf and Elrond tomorrow. This seems beyond our capabilities right now." He kissed the side of my head once we reached my bed.
He turned to go, but my voice stopped him. "Legolas? Could you stay with me in case....in case something happens?"
"Of course." He said sweetly.
We lay in bed, limbs tangled up together as I fell asleep once again with the one I loved by my side.
