"Death!!"

Dark clouds loomed overhead, making it like night even though it was past midday.

We were stopped only a league away from the Fields of Pelennor, the huge open plain in front of the city of Minas Tirith.

It had been a hard three days of riding and no rest. I only hoped that Firefoot had enough energy left for the charge down the big hill into the front lines.

"Mount up!" Éomer's voice thundered out from where he was cantering his horse through the soldiers still resting.

"This is it, boy." I placed my hand gently on my horse's muzzle, feeling worried for the first time about war.
This time I would not only be killing Orcs, but Men as well who had joined Sauron's cause. I would have to kill another human being. I let out a shaky breath before I mounted.

"Dizziness, leave me be on this one." I muttered to whatever was inside of me that made me repeatedly pass out.

I had put basic armor on my horse, including a leather pad on his belly for when he reared up to attack. The armor that was on the front of his face was just for show. I was wearing chainmail for protection, but that was it.

We only cantered up the final hill, taking it slow as we formed lines.
When we got to the top, the sight before us was horrifying.

It was almost dark as night over the city and the battlefield. Hundreds of thousands of Orcs, trolls, Wargs, and countless other terrible things were everywhere.

Minas Tirith was completely under siege, many of the high towers already aflame from the catapults below. They had an enormous battering ram at the main gate, but it looked as if they had broken through awhile ago.

Whether they had known it or not, Gondor truly needed Rohan's help more than ever before.

The King rode in front of the lines on his grey charger back and forth, yelling out to his captains.

"Éomer, take your éored down the left flank. Gamling, follow the king's banner down the center. Grimbold, take your company right after you pass the wall. Forth, and fear no darkness!"

The captains shouted out that their companies were ready. I was in Gamling's, ready to take front and center of need be. I was in the third line, but once we charged I knew that my horse would take the lead with the king.

"Arise! Arise, riders of Théoden. Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered. A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises!"

Spears were lowered and aimed at the enemy that was far away. Yet despite the distance, we could all see how sharp their pikes, axes, and swords were.

I gulped. For once, I didn't feel confident. I could only hope that Legolas and the others could convince that ghost army to fight for us, and fast.

A rattling sound made me start in surprise. The king had drawn his sword and was now racking them against the spears as he still rode past in front of us to take his position.

"Ride now! Ride now! Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!" He screamed out for us all to hear. He knew that this may be the end for him and most of us, but he was going down fighting.

"Death!!" He yelled out.

We all raised our swords and spears together. "Death!"

We chanted it back and forth until we were all thirsting for blood.
I didn't understand how, but I suddenly felt proud to be about to fight alongside my fellow people from Rohan. I felt proud to fight for my friends, my country, the world. Now we were ready.
