Life.
It is so brief, yet so beautiful in the short time that it exists.
Life is the opposite of what I felt throughout my whole existence. Since I was a child, I had known death. Life was an entirely new concept to me. And love was unknown to me. Until now....During the four-day journey to Lothlorien, I had realized what love was.
When you love someone or something, your heart jumps for joy. Your heart can stop with anticipation, beat faster with excitement, or calmly slow down whenever the person or thing you love comes near.
I was in love.
I was wonderfully in love with Legolas.
I didn't know if I could ever tell him, though. When it came to conveying emotions, I was at a complete loss.
However, I was determined to tell him. I didn't know how, but....yes. I would tell him.I had been journeying for almost four days to the north, and I could see that Lothlorien was only a few miles away.
My black stallion Firefoot plodded on, pulling the cart containing me and Haldir's body behind him.
A voice rang out in Elvish.
"Stop."I stopped Firefoot knowing that if I didn't, I would probably die.
A patrol of Elves approached the cart completely armed with bows and spears, ready to kill if need be.
"Why are you here?" The captain said in the Common Tongue.
I gestured to the back of the cart.
They looked and immediately pointed their spears at my face.
An arrow was released and it grazed the side of my arm, making blood appear and start to drip down my arm. There was a stinging feeling and I knew that they had used poison on the tips of their arrows.
I gritted my teeth to suppress my scream of pain."Why is our general's body in your possession?" The captain growled out the words.
"He died in combat. I wish to bring him to Lady Galadriel. She knows what happened." I spoke calmly, but inside I was panicking.
"We will grant you your wish, only because our Lady's wrath will be great when she sees what you have brought us." They took hold of my horse's bridle and led him forward into the forest.
The Lady of Light did not unleash her wrath, like her soldiers anticipated. Instead, Galadriel looked at me sadly when she saw.
"Haldir was a great warrior. He did not deserve to have this happen to him. He will have the burial of a king, for his heart was as strong as the mightiest tree in the forest." She embraced me when she saw the sorrow in my eyes, whispering that she knew it wasn't my fault.
After the ceremony, Galadriel asked me to walk with her.
We walked down to a little courtyard that was lit up in the moonlight.
She walked up to an empty basin on a pedestal in the center of the clearing.
"This is the Mirror. It shows you the past, present, and even the future. I had Frodo look into it when you were last here, and he saw many things." She filled a pitcher of water and poured it into the basin as she talked.
"I would like you to look into it as well. I sense something inside of you. Something dark and forbidding of my power. I cannot see your future, so I am hoping that the Mirror can show you."
I nodded in agreement.
"When you came here, you were touched by poison. Somehow, your wound and the poison are both already gone." She said in wonder.
I gasped and checked my arm. Sure enough, the cut had disappeared and the sting of poison had vanished.
Galadriel stepped up to me.
"Let me try once more to see your future." I gulped and let her place her hands on either side of my head. She closed her eyes in deep concentration, trying to see what she couldn't.
I felt nothing. She stopped and took her hands away."Look into the Mirror and tell me what you see." She whispered and turned her back to me.
I took a deep breath and leaned over the basin of water.
At first, I saw nothing but water. Then the water changed into pitch black. I struggled to see past it, but all I saw was darkness."What do you see?" Galadriel turned back to look at me.
I finally looked up.
"Nothing."She inhaled sharply. "This is beyond my power. Something evil is at work here, Katherine. You must be careful from now on. I cannot help you."
I just stared at her face, which was changing in emotion every second.
Her face finally brightened."You must get some rest. You can leave tomorrow to meet the others at Isengard. I can at least see that far into the future. Sleep well, Katherine of Rohan." She bid me goodnight and left me in deep thought.
There was dark evil inside of me and if it scared Galadriel, I should be scared too.
I fell asleep hours later, tossing and turning until morning.
