I stood cautiously on top of the hill looking down on Isengard.
My trip from Lothlorien had been uneventful and I had made good time. It was the seventh day, the day Legolas had told me to meet them there.
The only question I had was if it was safe to go into the mouth of the enemy without knowing if my friends had arrived or not?Looking closely, I could see that the entire place was flooded with water and there were trees walking around in it. Trees? Walking trees??
I decided that it was safe enough to approach. I quietly mounted my stallion and rode down the hill.
As I reached the entrance, I was greeted by the most wonderful sight I had ever seen.
Pippin and Merry!!
They saw me and they laughed and cheered, happy to see me too. They were on top of the wall, so I swung up and hugged the both of them as tight as I could without suffocating them.
"What have you been up to?" I grinned and sat next to them.
"Oh nothing, you just missed an epic battle in which we were the heroes." Pippin stood dramatically with a mug of ale as he prepared to go into detail.
Merry sighed. "What Pippin means to say is, the Ents did all the work and we just threw rocks at the enemy."
"Ents? What are Ents?" I didn't know my Middle Earth history. Probably because I hadn't had any parents to teach me about any of it. It was sad, but true.
"Ents are the tree-herders of Fangorn Forest. They're normally gentle, but Saruman burned down the trees around here, so they got angry and attacked Isengard. Good thing they did, too." Pippin said with a smile.
"Why is it a good thing?"
"Because now Saruman's storeroom of food is ours." He gestured to the array of various foods and drinks that were laid out on the wall next to us.
I laughed and accepted an ale from Merry. We began to catch up on what all of us had missed.
Apparently, I was early. Everyone else was still traveling from Helms Deep and I had just been faster.
I spent the rest of the afternoon in comfort with my friends until late afternoon, when my keen hearing picked up the footsteps of many horses.
I was sitting on Firefoot once more, but this time I was more relaxed. My feet were out of the stirrups and my left leg was crossed over the front of the saddle. The reins were tied loosely on my horse's neck and I didn't touch them.
At last, we could finally see them. Gandalf, Théoden, Éomer, Aragorn, Gimli, and....the one I loved. Legolas.
"Welcome, my Lords. To Isengard!!" Merry stood up and gestured grandly to the wreckage of the fortress.
Gandalf looked up at them and then down at me, shaking his head. I couldn't stop smirking at everyone's face. They had expected a battle when they came, but everything had already been taken care of.
"You young rascals!!" Gimli began to yell at us from his seat behind Legolas. "A merry hunt you've led us on and now we find you feasting and....and smoking!!"
Pippin leaned forward from his perch on the wall. "We are sitting on a field of victory, enjoying a few well earned comforts. The salted pork is particularly good."
I nodded, agreeing with him.
"It is, actually."Gimli was speechless as he noticed the piles of extra food behind the hobbits. "Salted pork."
Gandalf muttered grumpily, but I heard him anyway. "Hobbits...."
"We're under orders from Treebeard, who's taken over management of Isengard."
Merry informed us.
