"T-Tony, she's your daughter..."
"Are you sure?" Tony asked quietly, his face turning ghost white.
"I ran the test twice. Same result. She's yours, Tony." Tony suddenly stormed out of the room, leaving behind the stunned superheroes.
"Well, Stark won't let us lock her up if she's his daughter." Steve pointed out, the others nodding in agreement. "We should let her join the team like Buck said."
"When she wakes up, I want Romanoff to interrogate her. See what she knows. If she proves useful, we'll make her join the team." Fury ordered the Avengers nodding and going off to do their own thing until Jay woke up.
Meanwhile, Tony was leaning against the wall in the hospital room, staring down at Jay's completely still body. The only movement was the steady rise and fall of her chest. He held her deck of cards in his hands, looking down at them curiously. There was a sudden twitch of her leg, followed by a lurch of her whole body. She growled, scrunching her eyes closed as she tried to fight some unseen force. She was having a nightmare, and by the looks of it, not an easy one. She started mumbling something incoherent, but one word kept coming up. Experiment.
Her eyes suddenly sprang open and she sat up, breathing heavily as she stared ahead of her.
"Hey, you ok? That sounded pretty serious." She flinched at his voice, obviously not realizing that he was there.
"Nightmares. Ever heard of them?" She growled, dropping back onto her pillow and putting her hands on her forehead.
"You were much more pleasant when we didn't know you were secretly a vigilante."
"How would you know? I only said three sentences in your presence." He chuckled lightly, pulling up a chair and sitting next to her bed. "So why are you here? Last I checked, we aren't related or anything."
"Haha, yeah. Just wanted to ask you something."
"Give me a bottle of painkillers and maybe I'll talk." She groaned, clutching her chest in pain. Tony rolled his eyes and handed her a few pills. She swallowed them gratefully, lying back on her pillow and meeting eyes with him. "Ok, ask away."
"Who were your parents?"
"My mom's name was Poppy Sydney. I didn't know my father, she just told me that he had other things to worry about than raising a family. Told me that he wouldn't have wanted me anyway. I guess it's true, seeing as he's been absent all my life." She paused, narrowing her eyes at him. "What's it to you?"
He was about to answer when the door opened to reveal Natasha. "Tony, Fury said not to tell her yet." Jay raised an eyebrow to question what it was about but was cut off by a glare from Nat. "Now, I'm going to ask you some questions and you're going to answer them." Jay nodded, pressing her lips into a thin line and staring at Nat, waiting for her to continue. Tony stood up and leaned against the wall, his eyes switching between Nat and Jay.
"Go ahead. I've only told one lie to you, and I intend to keep it that way." She saw Natasha's face soften for a brief millisecond before her expression hardened once more.
"How did you get your powers?"
"Dunno. Had them since I was born. I think it was on my mum's side, though. At least that's what she told me." Jay said, looking down at her chest and pulling down her shirt to look at the bloody bandage.
"Why did you become a vigilante?"
"Because people need protecting. And besides, if I wasn't here when I heard that Ash was attacking this base, then he would've brought it to the ground. I guess I also became Atlas because I didn't want to abandon the people of the world like my father did to me and my mother."
"What happened to your mother?" Tony asked, stepping forward.
"Car accident during the battle of New York. The cops told me it was because of the explosions." She shot a pointed glare towards Tony, making him instantly silence and find his feet particularly interesting. Nat cleared her throat, reverting the conversation back to her.
"Fury has told me that you might be a useful asset to the team. Would you like to join our team?"
"I won't join your team, but I will help you defeat Ashtaroth. I'm no hero, Nat." She said quietly, fiddling with her thumbs nervously.
"Thank you for your cooperation, Jaylynn."
"I'm guessing we're off nicknames for each other?"
"You broke the trust between us. It's gonna take more than a few answers to some questions to gain it back." Jay nodded in understanding, watching as Natasha left the room followed closely by Tony.
Right as he was about to close the door, he looked back at Jay with a sad expression before leaving entirely.
Sorry, everyone, this chapter is a little short!
I had a lot to do today, and I didn't have a lot of time to write a whole lot.
As always, thanks for reading! :)
