It was almost seven thirty by the time Gideon woke up. I was sitting in my bed flipping through the journal when I noticed him stirring across the room. I put the journal down and went over to the bed to check on him. I sat down on the edge of the bed and noticed that he was acting as if he was having a nightmare. I got up on my knees and leaned over him, shaking him lightly.
"Gideon!" I whisper-shouted. He jerked awake and threw the blankets off. "Jeez, are you okay?" He finally noticed me sitting next to him and blushed, pulling the blankets back up to his chest.
"Mabel!" I finally noticed why he was embarrassed, his sweater was sitting beside him.
"Dude, I've seen you shirtless before. It's nothing to be ashamed of." I reminded him.
"Well yes but-" He stopped himself. "That was a different time." I rolled my eyes but turned around so he could put it back on anyway.
"So what were you dreaming about?" I asked.
"Nothing, don't worry about it." I turned back around and he pulled his blue cape around himself. "What time is it?" I glanced at the old alarm clock on the table between the beds.
"Like seven thirtyish. Why?" Gideon shook his head.
"I need to leave. I don't want to burden you." I put a hand on his shoulder. That's it, Gids. If you try to leave tonight I'll run off into the woods again." He sighed.
"That's a low blow, Pines. But I suppose we have a deal." We both winced slightly when he mentioned deals. "I mean... an agreement." He sat down on the bed. "Why do you even care?" I shrugged and sat down next to him.
"Why do you want to leave?" He shook his head.
"I don't want to leave, I just... don't want to make things harder for you."
"And making me worry about you is going to make things easier for me?" He sighed and fell back on to the bed. I fell back with him and stared at the ceiling. "Ford doesn't trust you. He thinks that you're taking advantage of me and that you're going to trick me into making a deal with Bill Cipher." Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Gideon nod.
"That's why." We were quiet.
"You're an enigma," I said. Gideon turned and looked at me.
"I am?" I nodded.
"The things you do. The reasons you do them. Your thought process." I turned to look at him. "The way you handle your emotions. It's all a mystery."
"Why do you say that?" I shrugged.
"Mostly the way you act around me." We were both quiet again. Gideon slowly intertwined his fingers with mine and looked back up at the ceiling.
"Mabel, I'm sorry. It's not fair how I've acted towards you. The truth is... I don't know how to properly express my emotions. You've already seen the environment I grew up in. My father believes that you should only value the lives of those whom you can benefit from. But the first time I saw you in the forest, I was out looking for the same journal you had in your hands. But I saw you, and I knew I couldn't just take the journal from you. And you showed me so much kindness..." I smiled and squeezed his hand.
"I get it, Gideon. Sometimes it's hard to articulate your feelings. Especially when you have a crush." He blushed and looked back at me.
"How could you tell?" I smirked.
"You telling me you loved me was a pretty good hint." He blushed, embarrassed, and covered his eyes with his free arm.
"I'm an idiot." I laughed.
"No you're not, you're a preteen. We're all idiots." Gideon smiled.
"I guess you're right." I sat up and pulled Gideon up with me.
"Here." I pulled him into a hug. "Gids, I gotta confess. I like you too."
"Really?" I nodded.
"There's been so much going on lately, but you've been so cool and protective of me. It's really admirable." Gideon was quiet for a moment.
"Mabel?"
"Yeah?" He pulled away from the hug and kissed me.
