"A week left..." I say pessimistically, looking down at his boots. "You say that like it's a bad thing!" says Chris Wallace, his best friend, "I'm ready to rack some raghead bodies!" I spit on the floor, "It is a bad thing. I mean, yeah, we signed for this shit, but fuck..." Wallace laughs, "Ohh come on Winters, did you just expect to NOT go out there at some point? Look at the world nowadays, it's shit. Well, we're gonna kick Iraq in its balls." I nodded in a fake agreement, mainly just to get Wallace to shut up. We had been best friends since boot camp 3 years ago, so I know to just nod and act somewhat on board to please him.
"How's the girlfriend gonna take it?" Wallace asks Winters with a dumb grin. I looked at him with an annoyed look, "how the fuck you think she's gonna take it?" Wallace shrugged, "She's a Marine too, I thought she'd be happy you get to go rack some bodies." I just rolled his eyes and looked at his watch. "Fuck it... I'm gonna go home now, I'll catch you around Wallace." I stand up and smack Wallace's shoulder, "Keep yourself out of trouble, and if you can't then name it after me."
Walking through his base house door, I could see my long time girlfriend,Courtney Williams, sitting down on the couch. She had removed her cammie blouse but was still wearing her boots and trousers, showing she must've just gotten home too. "Hey baby," She smiles, standing up and walking to hug me. I can see the stress of me leaving soon in her eyes, they look so much more tired.  She gives me a short kiss and says, "How did your day go?" I just shrugge and set my keys down in the dish by the door, "As good as it could go I guess." She nods, knowing the stress I'm in. "Well, come in, grab something to eat or order something in. We can order Chinese and watch a movie or something." The idea didn't sound half bad to me, so I walked over to the shelf and started looking at movies they owned. Black Hawk Down was the first one I saw, probably not something Courtney would want to see at the moment. The next one that caught my eye was Saving Private Ryan, probably not much better. Next, Transformers. I figured that was a much safer bet being that the whole movie is Sci Fi. I slide it into the Xbox and sat down by Courtney, slowly eating take out Chinese and trying to make the best of the night.
As the movie finished, I sir up, looking over at Courtney who was half asleep. I smiled and said,"Tired love?" She didn't say anything, just stretched a bit and nodded. Without warning, I swooped her up in my arms and carried her upstairs bridal style. Laying her down and pulling the blanket over her, I kissed her forehead and laid down beside her. She rolled over and faced me, smiling lightly. "I love you dork," she said in a soft voice. I smiled and pulled her in, wrapping my arms around her, "I love you too weirdo, now sleep, we're up at 0500." Within seconds of me saying anything, she was already out, breathing slowly into my chest. I lay there, arms wrapped around her and thought to myself, "If she's the reason I'm going out there, I've got a damn good reason..."
