Evangeline
I stood still with emptiness in my chest as the fog grows thick around me. It has been four years since I last set foot on this very ghost town. Before the streets and cottages were emptied from infected and deceased corpses, there was only never-ending bliss. Happiness. And Family.
This town once sheltered community and was rumored as heaven on earth. But after the Plague, after the Black Death struck us, it left me nothing but emptiness and unfindable solace for my grief.
If I had not fled off from Wales, I would have been with my parents right now, at heaven.
Leaving was the chance to live another life again. And after so many times of sleeping in hospitable strangers' cares, hoping to find a new family, I finally stopped.
The Assassin Order took me in after such a heavy snow storm in the midst of winter. They trained both my body and my mind to be brave no matter what. I always thought my never ending emptiness would never disappear, but they did what they had to do.
Bones were cracked nor broken during my training, including my fear of heights.
I used to have nightmares that I was jumping off the highest watchtowers in our town.
But now, my fear became my favorite, and a nightmare turned out to be a dream come true. I call it the Leap Of Faith whenever I jump off a building and land on a haystack or something that would keep me from ending my own life.
After the graduation of my training, my Mentor gave me our Order's uniform. It was uncomfortable at first wear since it was leather on the exterior and fleece on the interior. But the longer I endure the pain, I seem to have like it now.
Though aside from all that, from what the Assassins have offered me and took me in as though I was only their sister, I feel there is still one last fragment that is missing. I feel I must find a way to relive the bliss again in this town. There is bliss, I'm just not sure if I'll be able to find it alone.
"Evangeline, let's go, I fear Mentor is wondering where the heck we have fled to by now." Alexander says. He's one of my classmates from my training, and seemed to be one of my best childhood friends. We grow up together because our mothers were half-sisters.
We're standing in the middle of a ghost town because I somehow managed to find my way in through the forest that cloisters the town away from the monarchial societies.
Our town was committed to democracy, we had the freedom to vote on whoever our future leaders would be. We were the only town, nation to be exact who were democratic in all the European continent. And now the town has no longer existed.
"Evie." Alexander's voice shudders me from my thoughts. The sight of the fog surrounding the town must have made me reminisce. "Let's go, or we'll lose our target, again."
My lips curved, turning around with my hoodie unworn. I only reveal my face to close friends nor relatives (if I ever have one despite that I know I'm the only one left of my bloodline). The same when I wear the most real smile I could ever have in my face full of darkness and secrecy.
Alexander's forest green eyes brighten throughout the sun shining above the fog, releasing me from fright. I bore into his eyes for a little more until he looks away, smirking.
"I'm not the one you should be aiming for." He says, darkly, mischievously.
"Nor will I ever be because we're cousins." I mutter back and blow away a strand of hair out of my face. "That would be incest, wouldn't it?"
I admit, for some quite a long time I have been seeing Alexander more than a family. You may call it weird but the lust is getting uncontrollable as we speak and reunite.
Though we never kissed because not only is he also the remain of our bloodline but because he's a well-known player. Both of us are and it seems to run in our blood.
He smirks again. He's fond of my flirtatiousness since I am known to be a player when it comes to feelings. He even guessed that love would be my favorite game of all that I also would hit on my own cousin.
"It wouldn't be if we'd just pretend."
I step forward, clearly seductively. "I sense you're giving up."
"I could show you my hidden blade if you want."
Alexander is really extremely handsome.
"Which? The one on your wrist or the one in your pants?"
He draws me nearer and teasingly brushes his nose on my neck. I hear him sniff my perfume intensely. "Hmm, roses."
"Good Lord!" We pull apart upon the hear of our Mentor's roar coming just behind me. I stare at him declining what he just saw as Alexander proceeds on looking as chill as smoking ice. "By all means, when did this incestuous relationship started?"
I sense Alexander stealing glances at me as I answer, "if you had not interrupted, Mentor, it would have been starting now."
"Mentor, it was just a practice Evangeline had offered to teach me." Alexander takes a step forward. Liar. "A practice about... On how to kiss a girl for the first time."
"Why would Evangeline teach you how to kiss? She has not lose her virtue yet and you're a well-known Casanova." Mentor huffs. "Plus, you're both cousins by blood. Doesn't that disgust you?"
It does when you call the both of us cousins or related.
"Look, Mentor. What you saw back there was a mistake so change of conversation, aye?" I awkwardly grin.
Mentor just looks at me strangely as though I have morphed two heads on my shoulders.
He sighs, turning to his back and motioning for us to follow. "We have to talk about what I saw back there after we arrive back at headquarters, got it?"
Alexander and I share a mischievous glance as we exit the heavily fogged town.
"I'll get you for this." He whispers, smugly.
"Not if I get you first." I reply as we begin to mount on our horses.
