🎵🎵Idina Menzel - Let It Go
The week after Lois was discharged from the hospital was the worst week in her life. Her parents, who rarely had the time for her and her sister were fussing over her;her sister, Ella kept crying every time she saw Lois and the pity on the face of their neighbors was too much for her to handle.
That wasn't the worst though. The worst was having dreams every night in which she could walk and move her lower body. The worst was closing her eyes and imagining herself in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
She had always wanted to be in the army ever since she had watched a movie with her sister in which the heroine was a soldier. Mrs. Clarke, her mother had laughed it off and thought Lois would grow out of the idea and Ella had pulled her aside and said to her,
"I love you sis but you can't go to the army. Trust me on that."
"I wanna go and no one can stop me!" she had screamed and run to her room.
Just 6 years old then and she was ready to take the world by storm and now four years later, here she was stuck in a wheelchair. The tears that fell down her face were uncontrollable as she reminisced on the past. Nostalgia had never felt so wicked to her.
The front door of the house banged and Lois knew without a doubt that it was her sister, Ella. She stifled a laughter and thought , Ella will be the undoing of mom and dad.
Ella had the habit of banging doors when their parents were in the house. She told Lois that they were so prim and proper that it drove her crazy sometimes.Deciding not to wait for her sister, Lois slowly moved her upper body towards her wheelchair situated just beside her bed. Every time she moved, she felt a sharp pain just at the base of her neck. The doctors couldn't explain that so they asked her to reduce movement of her upper body as much as she could.
When she finally got into the wheelchair, she was sweating profusely and the hair bangs her mom had done for her was plastered to her forehead. She wheeled herself towards the living room and expected Ella to be arguing with their mother but instead, saw their parents and Ella seated.
Lois moved closer as quietly as she could and hoped that they wouldn't notice her."- his name is Dr. Gold and he's a very talented and dedicated surgeon. I talked to him and he said he would have to see Lois himself. Just for consultation." Ella was saying.
"You went behind our backs to talk to a doctor? How dare you Ella?" Mrs. Clarke was getting angry.
"I was trying to find help for my sister!" Ella retorted.
Lois knew an argument was about to break loose unless their dad intervened which he rarely did. A flicker of hope burned within her just for a moment. Maybe I could walk, she thought.
"Calm down." Mr. Clarke said to both his wife and daughter.
"Do you have his number?" he asked Ella.
"Yes Dad. I have it here." Ella said and picked her phone to go through it.
"No way. He's halfway across the country. Did you even think of how to get your sister there? You listen to me Essabella Matilda Clarke, don't ever try that again. Your sister is not going anywhere and that's final."
Mrs. Clarke's voice had an air of anger and authority that even her husband could not bring himself to say anything. She got up and brushed her hands over her skirt.
Lois decided to notify them of her presence and screamed,
"No mom! No. No one decides what's good for me but me!"
Her family stared at her transfixed and shocked that they hadn't realized that Lois had been there the whole time.
