“Can’t believe they let you off the hook with just a week of detention,” Adam muttered in awe as we lounged in our living room eating day old pizza and drinking Monsters.
“I mean, come on, a bar fight? You would think it would be worth a month’s worth of deten-”
“We’re both good students,” Derek grunted as he reached for another slice, “The adim likes us and we served it with no trouble, theres no reason to punish us more than we deserve.”
“Not to mention the fact that you’re the star forward,” Riley mumbled, “Montgomery would be screwed without you. Can’t believe they’re making you try out again, you really shouldn’t have to.”
Derek smiled, “That too and yeah man, sucks ass, I should be put on the team automatically!”
I nearly choked on my pizza, bits of chewed up crust sputtering across the room.
“Wha-wha-?” I gasped as Riley pounded my back with his palm, “What?!”
Derek hazily yawned, “Soccer tryouts are tomorrow genius, hope you’ve been practicing.”
My jaw dropped in disbelief, “Practicing? Derek, I was with you after school for the past week! How’d you practice?”
Adam guffawed, “That’s a sick joke Aaron! Derek? Practice? Those two words don’t belong in the same sentence! He’s a natural!”
Derek smirked as he chugged his Monster, “Au naturel baby.”
Idiot.
I instantly felt lightheaded, soccer tryouts? Already? So soon?
“Riley,” I glared at the silent brunette, “You mind speaking to me for a sec?”
Riley’s apologetic eyes met mine as we walked into his room and shut the door behind us.
“So,” I smiled sweetly, drawing small circles on the floor with the toe of my shoe, “Since when were soccer tryouts tomorrow?”
“Since forever,” he mumbled through a mouth of food.
“Riley you idiot!” I fumed, “What the hell? It’s tomorrow? What? How? Why?!”
Riley slightly cringed, still chewing on his pineapple pizza, “Sorry Erin, I thought you knew.”
“I obviously didn’t Riley!” I spat as he calmly sipped his Monster.
“Ugh! I won’t make the team,” I hissed frustratedly, “Trevor! I have to make it for him!”
Riley quickly swallowed, “Relax, we still have time! We have tonight and tomorrow!”
I eyed him skeptically as he brushed off the crumbs on his blazer.
“Is that why you’re so lax? Cause you think we have time?!” I demanded. “Dude, it’s already 7:32 and we have class tomorrow! We’re out of tim-”
“Ditch,” Riley encouraged, “Ditch with me. We’ll practice all day tomorrow as well as today. You done with your homework?”
I frowned, “Yeah.”
“Then let’s do it.”
“But what if we get caught,” I mumbled hesitantly, “I’m already in enough trouble as it is.”
