Picture of Erin (Emma Roberts!) and Taylor Swift’s ‘Long Live’ on the side!
The weather was completely wrong for the occasion.
Utterly wrong.
I was actually quite pleased earlier in the day when the sun just barely peeked out from under the dark clouds but now it was at full blast, its warm rays raining intense heat over us. But what can you expect? Summer was drawing near.
The atmosphere was completely off as well. Bright neon tents were scattered across my backyard as the guests lounged under them happily chattering amongst themselves eating small cucumber sandwiches and sipping berry lemonade.
Where was the mourning? The grief? The tears?
My parents had done things differently from a traditional service; the guest were to meet at my house for a light lunch before heading off to visit Trevor together.
I checked my watch; 11:45.
I anxiously paced around the kitchen, wringing my hands together in silence.
Taking a deep breath, I checked my watch again; 11:47.
Two minutes had passed and I was growing impatient.
I needed to see Trevor now.
I was losing a battle within me, a battle to stay strong and not break into the many pieces I already was.
“Erin,” Savannah muttered from behind me, “Come outside for a quick bite.”
I shook my head, “I’m not hungry.”
Anxiously pacing around the room, my white heels sharply clicking on the wooden floor.
Sighing, my best friend grabbed my hand and led me to the living room.
“Sit, take a deep breath, and chill.”
I slowly obeyed her command but my quivering frame didn’t cease shaking.
“Erin,” she whispered soothingly, “Relax. Please.”
I closed my eyes.
“You look nice,” I finally choked out after a moment of utter silence, “I like your dress.”
Savannah gave me a small smile as she spread out the wide skirt of her black dress across her lap, “Thanks, I like yours too.”
I looked down at the pale white satin and shrugged, “My parents don’t.”Savannah waved her hand dismissively, “Pish posh, so what if you’re the only person here wearing white? That’s what Trevor would’ve wanted.”
I nodded my head in agreement, white symbolized renewal. Bliss. Forgiveness. Acceptance.
For the first time since my brother’s death, I finally could accept it.
“-outside please!”
I looked up at my best friend, “Come again?”
Savannah stood up, “You didn’t hear that? Your mom just announced to everyone it’s time to leave and go outside to drive there.”
I shrugged, everything was shutting down on me today. My optimism. My hearing. Even my sight was failing.
“Erin, let’s go to the car!”
I felt limp as I dragged my body out the door and into my parent’s Sedan.
Irritatedly, I rubbed my sore eye and sighed.
I was finally going to see Trevor.
