I didn’t have class the next day, which meant double shift at the coffee shop. Henley was working so I got the deets on her skating date from the other night. As she recounted the events of the previous evening, she had this uncontrollable smile on her face, one that let you know that there was something, or rather someone behind the cause of that smile. I couldn’t help but feel I had a similar reason to smile that big as well. I just wished I could share it with someone.

As lunch time rolled around, the customers started piling in and the atmosphere turned a little chaotic. Some people get flustered in times like this, but for me, I get a kind of high from it. Like an adrenaline rush and today I was on a roll. I was just about to take an order to a table when Henley came over to me and whispered, “There’s someone at the door for you.”

I looked up at the front door and no one was there. When Henley say my confused face she said, “Not that door, the back door.” She said tilting her head to the door that said ‘staff only’.

“Who is it?” I asked curious as to who would use the back door to see me, and then it clicked just as Henley said quietly, “Umm Harry Styles.” She shrugged, implying that she was nonchalant about this fact, but her face betrayed her. She was way curious. How was I going to explain this one?

“I’ll make sure no one goes back there to gave you two some privacy, but you’ll only have a couple of minutes.” I gave Henley a grateful smile as I pushed open the staff  door to see Harry standing in the threshold of the backdoor.

I gave him a questioning look and he shrugged and said, “We didn’t get a proper goodbye last night and I just couldn’t imagine us leaving like that.” My heart rate began to quicken as I ran through the possible scenarios as to what he defined a ‘proper’ goodbye.

“Oh, so using fire escapes to make a secret getaway is not a normal goodbye for you?” I asked, not wanting to make the first move.

“Not quite. But our whole relationship has been built on abnormality so far hasn’t it?”  I only nodded because I had lost my ability to speak. This moment seemed bigger than it was. More than just a goodbye. This moment was make or break, I could feel it.

We didn’t have a lot of time, so I decided to throw all caution to the wind. I walked towards Harry and stopped right in front of him, so close we were almost touching. He seemed frozen to the spot. I stared up at him, into his eyes. Those eyes that hid so much from the world and I thought maybe one day I would be the one that he would share those secrets, that depth, with.

I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek. I could feel his dimple beneath my lips as I lingered there. I put a hand on his shoulder to steady myself. “Goodbye Harry.” I whispered as I lowered myself back onto flat footing.

Footsteps could be heard getting closer to the door we were behind. “You should probably get going.” I said looking behind my shoulder at the staff door.

“See you soon.” Harry grinned as I returned my gaze to him.

               “Yes. See you.” I said.

He walked towards the exit, but turned to give me a wave before he left and I gave a little wave back. I stood there for a few minutes after he had left, reliving those few minutes we had just shared.

As I opened the staff door to return to the coffee shop I mirrored the grin Henley had on earlier today. The bustle of the coffee shop soon took me over and I picked up my pen and pad to take customer’s orders.
