I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I rolled over and groaned, I still had a half hour before my alarm was supposed to go off. I cursed under my breath at whoever was calling me so early. It was Harry. I should have known.
“Hey.” I croaked, my vocals chords were not used to being used so early in the morning.
“I have a proposition for you!” He had obviously been up for a while because he was way too energized for the early hour.
“I’m still trying to recover from the last proposition you suggested.” Referring to the night Harry proposed we lie to everyone we knew and loved about our relationship.
“I’m going to ignore that comment because this idea is just too good” He said, ploughing on “Let’s go on a road trip!” I could hear the excitement in his voice.
“When?” I asked, still groggy from the sleep.
“Today!” I was about to protest but Harry cut me off. “Call it a sick day. It’s the perfect excuse.”
“Harry, I don’t know.” I was a little weary, but the idea of spending the entire day with Harry sounded really appealing.
“Oh come on, when’s the last time you did something reckless like this?” He had a point, I always played by the rules, it was time to let loose a little. And if there ever was a time to do something reckless it was with Harry Styles.
“Fine. Fine I’ll do it.” I said giving in and cracking a smile.
“Yes! Okay I’ll be at your place in an hour. Be ready.” I hung up. It was impossible to wipe the smile off of my face. Now all that was left to do was to try my acting skills out on my roommates and pretend I was sick like my Oscar was depending on it.
I messed up my hair more than the usual morning disaster that it is. I rubbed my nose and pinched my cheeks to make them look red. Then I draped a blanket over my shoulders and grabbed some tissue for extra measure.
I walked out of my bedroom sniffling and shuffling my feet. Olivia was sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast.
“You okay Al?” She looked concerned. I nodded meekly and took a seat at the table as well. “No really, you don’t look so good.” She said walking over to me and putting her hand on my forehead. I was thankful that Olivia was naturally really cold because it made my average temperature forehead seem like it was on fire compared to her ice cold hands
“You’re burning up!” She said, just as I suspected. “Well I do have a bit of a headache.” I confessed.
“Maybe you should stay home for the day.” Olivia said. “I can go to your classes and pick up any homework you need, so don’t worry about that.” What a gem. But her kindness only created a knot of guilt form in my stomach. At least lying made me sweat, adding my fake sick appearance.
“You might be right, but-“ I tried to protest, because that’s what I would usually do in this situation, but Liv as adamant, “No, Alix you’re staying home today.” And that was final. She walked me back to my room and tucked me into my bed. She tended to take on the mom role in our friendship.
I thanked her as she told me to get better soon. I stayed in bed until both Sydney and Olivia left and then I immediately threw off the covers, I only had a half hour to get ready. I put on a pair of jeans and a wool sweater and scarf. It was one of those days where it was warm enough to get away without wearing a jacket, but you still needed to bundle up in order to stay warm. I didn’t have enough time to shower so I put my hair up into a messy bun.
