I woke up around noon and went straight to the kitchen. To my dismay, the fridge was absolutely barren. Sydney who was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee said, “We should make a trip to the market.” By we, she probably meant me, but she surprised me by saying she’d come along.
It turns out Sydney only wanted to come with me so she could tell me about her night with Harry. I kid you not, she spent the entire walk telling me what great time she had with Harry last night. Apparently they had left the party early and went to a club together where she told me there were tons of paparazzi waiting outside. She was pretty sure they were photographed together and she couldn’t have been more proud of that fact.
We went to the usual market on the corner. Just as we were approaching the till I heard Saul, the grocer who I saw every week, say “Hey you’re that girl.”
I turned around smiling, he had finally remembered me! “Finally! Yes I–” But I was cut off mid sentence as I turned around and saw that Saul was not talking to me, but instead was pointing at Sydney.
I was confused, Sydney never picked up groceries. So how did Saul recognize her and not me? Sydney looked confused too, but then Saul held up a magazine that was near the checkout counter.
“This is you yes?” He asked, pointing to an image on the front cover. I leaned in closer to get a better look. It was definitely Sydney, but more importantly it was also definitely Harry. They were seen leaving a club, holding hands. The caption read: Harry’s mystery girl revealed. Wow, news travelled fast.
“That’s me!” Sydney said beaming. “Can I get a picture with you?” Saul said and Sydney obliged, asking me to take the photo for them.
We left the grocery store and Sydney was on cloud nine, feeling all important. I on the other hand was sulking. Not only had she stolen Harry from me, but Saul too. She was just a boy stealing bitch these days.
“So is this thing with Harry official?” I asked, the bitterness evident in my voice, but Sydney was too elated to catch my negative tone.
“Well we’re going out for dinner tonight.” She said, smiling.
“Oh that’s great,” I said, faking enthusiasm. “What are you going to wear?” I only asked that question because I knew Sydney would go on a rant of the perfect outfit, leaving little room for me to talk. And in this moment I wanted just that.
I spent most of the day in my room, avoiding Sydney who was getting more anxious by the minute. I emerged from my room only to say goodbye to her, feigning excitement. I was worried I was going to have to see the two of them together, but I found out Harry had sent a car for her. I would have refused, but Sydney seemed to like being caught up in the extravagance of it all. I guess that’s why she was with Harry and not me.
It seemed like dinner made things official between the two of them because they had spent every night that week together. Luckily they didn’t seem to be that couple that stayed home and watched movies, rather every date was a public event. I never had to ask Sydney how her night was because I could just read about it online the next day. Hashtag vomit.
Even so, I made it my personal mission to stay as far away from the flat as possible, taking as many double shifts at the cafe as my schedule would allow.
See, my theory was, that if I ignored my feelings for Harry, eventually they would go away. Here’s a little foreshadowing for you though: it didn’t work.
