PART TWO: SAVE ME
In two weeks, I had done nothing but watch my family go about their daily business. On the fourth day, they began to fade out more. By the ninth day, quick movement made by them we're blurry and gave me a headache. By the fourteenth day, I couldn't see dark colors.
I could always see the tears, though.
When my family wasn't crying, there were the tear stains. Mom quit her job to take up scrap-booking (her latest subject was my life) and went to high schools around the county talking about texting and driving.
Jake stayed in my room, and sometimes I could tell he could see me, because he would whine and put his head on his paws, staring at me with sad eyes.
I hardly ever saw Draven, and when I did he looked at me with large, guilty eyes that I could never meet with my own. I think I made it worse.
On the sixteenth day, I could hardly see anything of my world. I sometimes saw dark clothing, and the brown hair of my entire family. So you can imagine my surprise when Reagan came over with her dad to say sorry to my family, probably as a permanent good-bye, and both she and her father were completely visible to me.
Mom let Reagan in, and I had become better than I had been at reading lips.
"Hi Mrs. Clermont," Reagan had said.
"Good..." something, "Reagan."
Reagan stepped into the foyer, and she looked right through me to my room. Jake barked behind me.
"Can I... room?" Reagan asked something. Mom nodded. My friend hugged the wall as she walked past me to my room. None of her went through me. I spun around, following her into my room. She cautiously shut the door.
As soon as I sat on my bed facing her, she whirled around, facing directly at me. Her eyes were frantic, searching for something. She found the notebook beside my bed, and through it open to an empty page. She snatched up the pen on my dresser. I stayed where I was.
Once she was finished freaking me out by writing whatever it was, she walked around to the front of me again, thrusting the notebook near my face. My eyes immediately widened before I even saw the note. My eyes snapped to hers, and she raised an eyebrow at me. I read the note.
'Okay, how did you get there?'
Oh my gosh.
Reagan can see me?!
I can't...
That's not...
"DRAVEN!"
"Yeah?"
"COME HER RIGHT NOW PLEASE."
Draven trudged in, and his eyes instantly widened when he saw Reagan with a notebook in front of my face.
Why have I never noticed Reagan's black hair before?
I began hyperventilating. How did she... but she never...
Leah Anne, ran in, probably hearing my frantic breathing, and upon seeing Reagan her eyes widened as well.
"Caitlin, please slow your breathing," Mrs. Puller tried to sooth me. My friend spun around to see Leah Anne. She waved at both her, and Draven.
I passed out.
--------------------------
Of course, being in this dimension didn't allow for me to be passed out for too long, but it's the thought that counts. I was so incredibly confused as to what was going on, I really could not take it.
It didn't help much, though. When I woke up, literally about two minutes later, both Reagan and her dad were sitting next to me, in this dimension. It was the most confusing, obvious thing in the entire world.
Reagan's dad was Draven's dad.
Draven and Reagan were siblings. Reagan and her dad had always had that black hair that, until now, I had always associated with Draven. How did I not see it before?
Literally, everything was clear when I woke up. I suddenly knew that when Leah Anne was "up north helping the creatures there" she as visiting her daughter, who was with the woman that Reagan's dad had re-married to.
Oh my gosh.
I'm dating my best friend's brother.
"Mom, did Cally just have a revelation?"
"Why else would she have passed out?"
"Well sorry, I've never seen anyone have one of those."
"I know, I know. Give her some space, Draven."
All the voices were giving me a headache that quickly diminished itself, then blossomed again when another voice broke the silence. I put my palms to my eyes and rubbed slightly. I kept my hands there.
"You...you're all related," I states groggily.
"That's right, Cally. No...don't sit up yet. Not yet. Revelations hurt sometimes."
"The heck is a revelation?" I mumbled.
"It's when someone in this dimension passes out, knowledge is given to them. It's fairly rare and usually only happens when someone is extremely confused." Reagan's dad responded.
"You," I pointed to him.
"Yes?"
"Don't talk."
"Okay..."
"I said don't talk it hurts my head." He didn't respond that time. I felt someone press ice to my head, but I didn't want to open my eyes just yet. So this is like a mini family reunion. I giggled to myself at the absurdity of it all.
"I still don't understand how she was able to get hit by a car and not realize she was about to be huit by a car," I heard Reagan whisper.
"It's my fau-" Draven began.
"No! Stop saying that!" I yelled, quickly sitting up and snapping my eyes open. I immediately clutched my head.
"What am I supposed to say? I'm the one who-"
"Nope."
"Yes I wa-"
"Stop it."
"There's nothing to-"
"Draven! I mean it. It was both of our faults. Now stop..." I paused, getting my first good look at him in two weeks. I met his eyes, and that's what really surprised me.
"What?" he whispered.
"Draven... Why is there black in your eye?" I softly questioned. He audibly swallowed, and looked at his lap.
"Caitlin!" Leah Anne chastised.
"What? I was just asking!" I countered. She scoffed, grabbing my arm and tugging me out of the room. She closed the door behind us.
"Caitlin, you've been sort of depressed lately, it's obvious to everyone. Well, Draven feels responsible for the reason you're depressed, so, he may have... he's taking it pretty hard." She sighed.
"What do you mean?" I whispered.
"He... he tried to...Cally, Draven tried to take his own life."
My hand flew to my face.
No one words came to me. There was nothing that could describe the guilt I felt, though I suppose that is ironic since it as all caused from his guilt.
"He..." I breathed, but I couldn't finish. I simply turned around, opening the door. I walked over to Draven, pulling him up and wrapping my arms around his waist, burying my face in the crook of his neck.
"I am so sorry," I whispered, tears stinging the back of my eyes. His hand almost immediately went to my back, his own forehead resting on my shoulder.
"It's not your fault." His voice was soft, muffled even more by my hair.
"Draven-"
"Shush. It's over now. It's all over and done with. Don't stress over it."
"How can I not, Draven?! You tried to-" he quieted me with a finger to my lips.
"I promise, Cally. It's over now. It's all done. Please don't worry."
"You can't stop me from worrying, Draven."
He smiled softly. "I know."
We stared at each other for a moment, me studying the new sliver of black in his left eye, him letting me.
Reagan cleared her throat next to us on my bed. "So uh... you and Draven?"
I blushed turning around, just as Draven draped his arm across my shoulders, also facing his sister.
"Um..." I started.
"Yes." Draven finished for me. Reagan nodded, looking between the two of us.
"Yeah I can see that," she finished. Her dad chuckled.
"Well," I shrugged off Draven's arm, sitting on the bed next to Reagan, "speaking of what you can see..." I looked at her accusingly, one eyebrow raised.
"Hahahaha... right... that."
"Oh yeah, that one little detail where you forgot to mention that you are half from another dimension."
She winced. "Well I couldn't very well explain that, could I? It's not something that comes up in a best-friend making conversation? 'Oh what's your favorite color? What's your middle name? What dimension are you from?'"
"I guess you're right."
"I always am," she stated proudly.
"Dork," Draven coughed beside me.
"You little-"
"Kids!" Reagan's-and I suppose Draven's-dad scolded. They wore identical sheepish looks on their face. I couldn't help but laugh. "Alright kiddo, it's passed your bed time," Mr. ... I don't even know what to call him... said to Reagan.
"Daddy, I just saw my friend again after making her think I thought she was dead. Can't I stay?" she whined.
"You have an early flight back to Darla tomorrow."
"But-"
"No, and that's it."
Reagan dropped her head on her neck. "Fine." She gave me a side hug. "Bye Cally. See you this summer, okay? Call me!"
"I'll try. Keep checking your inter-dimensional phone." I responded, and she laughed at me, shoving my shoulder back.
"Sure will."
"Nice to see you again Caitlin." Reagan's dad nodded at me, and I did the same in response. He turned to his son. "Draven, I don't want to see any more of this," he pointed at his eye, "ever again, got it? Under any circumstances."
"Sure thing dad," Draven rolled his eyes. His dad ruffled his hair and walked out, Reagan following close behind him, stopping to hug me and Draven. Casually, I scooted closer to Draven, leaning my head on his shoulder.
"You should have just talked to me," I whispered.
"You didn't seem in a very good mood to talk." He replied, sounding slightly saddened.
"I would have been."
"For me?" he asked, cheekily.
"Of course," I said back to him. I was serious. He turned around, wrapping his arms around my waist, and I put mine above his, slightly rubbing his back.
I was too caught up in the moment, at that point, to notice that I could, once again, see the light green of my bedspread, and my dog, nearly almost white in color come back into view. My entire world became as clear as a different dimension could, and it took until I was lying in bed that night to figure it out.
Reagan is my new connection.
