Alexander's POV
My mother seemed unaffected by my being slightly late to dinner, but she was quieter than usual as we ate. When I thought she wasn't going to say anything at all, she broke the silence.
"How're you and John doing?" She asked me, twirling her fork around in her mac and cheese.
"I'd say we're doing pretty good," I replied, stabbing some macaroni and eating it.
"Have you guys," she paused, "done it yet?" She asked.
If I hadn't of swallowed the macaroni I had just taken a bite of, I would have choked.
"N-no, not yet," I replied, taking a drink of the glass of milk in front of me.
"Oh, okay," she said, finally taking a bite of her food. "How's Eliza?" She asked me.
She sounded desperate. Looking for something to talk about. Anything. Anything to show me she cared.
"Eliza is good, I think. Stressed though. Everything with the baby, it's really hard on her," I said truthfully. My mom smiled at the concern in my voice.
"When's the baby due again?" She asked.
"Next couple of months. Probably around February 3rd.""Oh," My Mom said. "What's the gender? I don't think I've asked."
"It's a boy," I said simply, cutting a piece of steak off, swirling it in A1 and biting into it.
"Darn it," My mother replied. "I was kind of hoping it'd be a girl. Too many damn boys in this family," my mother whined.
I laughed. "Yeah I guess you're right," I said as I thought about how many girls were actually in my family.
I knew of a cousin or two. Maybe a few 'step' aunts. That was about it.
"Are you excited?" My Mom asked, tearing me away from my thoughts.
I looked up at her, stopped chewing and blinked in response.
"About the baby," she added, acknowledging my confusion.
"Oh, uh, yeah," I replied, finishing my plate of food off with a sip of milk.
"If you ever need anything, Alexander, I'm here. I know I've been a distant mother for a little bit, but I'm here. For you. John. The baby," my mother spoke.
I dropped my plate into the sink and turned towards her, finding that she had tears in her eyes.
"I know, ma," I told her. "And I love you for being there. You're everything someone could ask for in a mother, and I thank you for that."
Tears rolled down my mothers cheeks. She stood from her seat at the table and threw her arms around me.
"And you're the best son I could ask for," she replied easily, soaking my shirt with her falling tears.
I may have left her shirt a little wet as well. It was hard not to cry when she was.
Next update will probably be on Thursday. Maybe sooner I don't know.
