Joey's POV
Meghan looked at me with excitement in her eyes, also searching my own eyes for a look at approval. I nodded and stood behind her attentively as she got herself into the small plane. I crawled in after her, pressing my knees together in order to fit the both of us in this small space.
"Okay, we can go." I signaled to the pilot, allowing the plane to start making loud noises from the engine. The path in front of us is a large strip of gravel, everything had been cleared from the morning carnival. All that was left was the silent field of the old fairgrounds.
Within seconds, the sound of the noisy engine was blocked out of my ears from wind hitting the sides of my face, filling my ears with a constant beat. It was louder than the sound of driving with your windows down on the highway. It was a different feeling too, completely different, the wind hit your chest almost pushing you back, but you bring yourself forward on instinct. To me, this is the exact way I had imagined a bird flying.
The nose of the plane left the ground, letting the plane rock with the uneven wind. I have it a few seconds before the tail was now level with the nose. It was now safe to stay we were off the ground, and officially flying.
I looked over at Meghan, her eyes wide with excitement and lips turned up in a smile. She noticed my stare and looked over at me, returning my gaze. We said nothing though, anything I said would fly off into the wind, my words disappearing in half a second. But most of all, I just didn't feel the need to say anything at this very moment. You know those moments when you just feel like silence is the right answer. Like silence is not awkward, not loud, not noticeable, just perfect.
"I'm flying!" Meghan laughed, as if she had never flown in a plane before. But I agreed, it was a different feeling then an isolated feeling in a plane with load of strangers and recycled air.
Here it was just me and her. Us and fresh air. Another thing that made this so perfect.
I looked down at the world below me, watching as the blowing grass became smaller and smaller. Proving that I was growing higher, and it was falling lower below me. The plane sped up, making the engine roar and seating shake again. I looked behind me now, watching as Los Angeles fell behind me. I could see downtown, each building growing smaller with every loud roar of the engine.
"Meghan!" I said, making her head flip towards me.
She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, I pressed my lips over her already parted lips. Meghan's lips stiffened with my sudden touch, before melting into mine slowly. She fell closer by my side, almost impossible, judging by the space between us in this tiny plane. I brought my hand up to her face, resting my hand under her blowing hair and onto her warm neck.
After running my thumb up and down her cheek a few times, I pulled away, trying to catch my breath. Catching your breath is a really struggle when air is pressing against you and around you. I smiled at Meghan, our lips only a few inches apart. She smiled back, a huge smile, before turning back to the view ahead of her.
I looked back down again, seeing houses now, all bunched together in big neighbourhoods. All of them looked the same colour, same size, and the same shape from up here, even considering the blurriness caused by the speedy plane.
As I looked back up, I watched the glowing orange sun pass by us slowly. The brightness of it leaving a large green circle in front of my eyes every time I blinked.
Meghan's laugh drew my attention to her. She had her arms spread out, they fell behind her from the pushing wind. Her eyes were sealed shut and her hair dark brown hair blew behind her. I laughed with her, admiring the way she made every experience a hundred times better than it actually was. She picked out the great parts, and emphasized them to her greatest ability.
She even kept people stable around her. It felt like she kept a ship from rocking back and forth, she kept the wheel even with he weaknesses. Other people were supposed to be stronger around her, but it seemed like she was the strongest around us.
The air around me changed, not literally, but something changed. I suddenly felt like the air around me filled into me. I felt lifted, my soul lifted, as well as the edges of my mouth. It was a feeling I couldn't explain, the anxiety and pressure that weighed me down suddenly left me like the wind carried it out of me.
So I spread my arms out as well, mimicking her. I laughed as my arm intertwined with her's. After a few seconds, I brought my face close to hers. I watched her do the same, our foreheads touching.
"Wanna know something?" I tried to say as quiet and sincere as I could, but loud enough for her to hear behind the sound of an engine, and the rushing wind.
"What?"
"I love you, Meghan."
