After Dean finished going through my weapons, he put everything in the pack and gave it back to me.
"Thank you," I said, barely containing my annoyance. "Took your time," I muttered under my breath.
"You're welcome." He responded, clearly oblivious to my utterance. He went into Bobby's study room along with Sam. I made my way back into the living room. I sat on the couch and with a snap of my fingers, pulled a book out of thin air. It was titled 'Tower of Dawn'. About two hundred pages in, Cas appeared next to me.
"Hello, Cas," I said, not looking up from my book.
"Hello." He responded.
"Not used to people staying calm when you just randomly appear?"
"What?"
"I've heard you scare the living daylights out of Dean," I explained, straining to hide my smile.
"Oh. That. I, uh...have been known to...surprise Dean with my entrances..." I couldn't hold back anymore. I started laughing. Cas laughed along with me. We laughed until our sides ached.
"Oh boy. I haven't laughed that hard in years."
"Yes. I must admit, it feels better to smile and laugh for a genuine reason, or no reason at all." Cas agreed. Unexpectedly, a knock sounded at the door. I got up off the couch.
"I'll get it," I shouted so the others could hear me. Nobody came down, so I assumed they heard me. I opened the door slowly. Standing there, was the most impossible sight. My eyes widened in shock and disbelief.
"Shadow, are you okay?" Cas yelled.
"Uh. I'm not sure. Can you come here please?" Cas appeared right next to me.
"What is i-" Cas stopped mid-sentence and stared.
"Hey, little brother, little sister. How are you?"
The others all came to the doorway. As soon as they saw who it was, Bobby stood, eyes widened, Dean had his mouth slacking open. But the most surprised reaction was Sam's.
"Hey there, Moose."
"G-Gabe?" Sam stuttered. Gabriel gave Sam his signature grin.
"But...how?" Sam asked the question we were all wondering.
"Spritz of magic here, an illusion there, you can do anything."
"I wasn't asking how you faked your death. I'm asking how you could stay away from me. I prayed to you every night. All I needed was a sign that you were alive. Or don't you love me anymore? You could have just said!" Sam let out his grief and anger. I shook my head in disappointment."Sam, come with me for a second," I said. Sam nodded, tears running down his face. We both went outside and I literally shoved Gabe into the door. Sam took a deep breath, taking in the night air.
"Thanks, Shadow. I needed this."
"Eh. It's no bother." We were silent for a while. The only sounds were the chirping of crickets and hooting of owls.
"Shadow?"
"Hm?"
"Do you think...Gabe still loves me?" Fresh tears started trickling down his face. I took a tissue out of my pocket and handed it to him.
"I'm sure he does. I know my brother well. After all, he made me swear I'd protect all of you. He wouldn't make me promise if he didn't care."
"You're right. Thanks, Shadow."
"No problem."
"Hey, I've been wondering...well...your name..."
"What about it?"
"Not to be offensive, but it sounds more like a boy name."
"Perhaps to a human. But, as I'm sure Cas has already explained, angels don't really have a specific gender. Well, I do, but, you know...my name has a reason behind it."
"May I ask what that meaning is?"
"Sure. Um, well, before I was created, my destiny was set that I would be strong and brave. That I would die for my family. Basically, I would become my family's protector. Only unclear thing was, the path I'd take, the family I'd choose, was unknown. Then, there's the darkness inside me. It's also a part of my destiny. A hidden darkness, that I could bring destruction or peace. That would always affect which path I'd take. Which family would accept me." Sam nodded, taking in everything I said.
"So, really, there was a part of your destiny you could choose."
"Yes. Pretty much."
"Thanks again, Shadow. You're a good person."
"Not really, but you're welcome. You know, it's nice to be able to talk to someone who'll actually listen."
"What do you mean?"
"Let's just say...back in Heaven, only Cas and Gabe listened to me. But, when Gabe 'died' and Cas left, I was alone. There was no one left who accepted me. I was alone." I remembered all the names and wounds I received when Cas and Gabe weren't there.
"I kinda knew there was something under the cold mask you showed earlier today. You're not heartless. Deep inside, is an angel who just wants people to love and accept them." A small smile crossed my face.
"Nobody has ever thought of me that way, well, except for Cas and Gabe. Thank you, Sam."
"No problem." A soft breeze enveloped around me.
"I'm going to go back inside."
"Me too." I want to see if Gabe gets his just desserts. I thought, grinning inwardly. Sam opened the door and we both went inside.
