Five days after the disastrous date, Jane sat at home, munching on a bowl of cornflakes while scrolling through websites on her laptop. She was searching for information about the Nazca Lines. Although she didn't subscribe to the cliché theory of aliens drawing symbols and animals on Earth, she was curious about the motivations behind such monumental carvings—especially since the Nazca people had no way of seeing them from above without airplanes or satellites. Perhaps they had intended to communicate with visitors from other worlds, but that theory felt far-fetched, yet intriguing.

As she scrolled through the pages, she came across an image that didn't pertain to the Nazca Lines. Clicking on the link, Jane found a photo of a perfectly shaped circle carved into the ground, decorated with intricate labyrinth-like lines.

She took another spoonful of cornflakes, her curiosity piqued, and read the article beneath it:

"Friday, February 10, 2008: Curious signs discovered outside New York in an industrial area of Jersey City. A prank? Or is someone trying to convey something important?"

Caught off guard, she choked slightly on her food, hastily swallowing the pieces. Five days ago—that was the same day she had gone on that awful date! Panic surged through her. She cursed herself for letting her work slide because of some ridiculous outing. After regaining her breath, she quickly dialed Darcy.

"Jane! Finally, you're calling! Did the date go so well that you—"

"Shut up, Darce!" Jane interrupted, frustration bubbling over. "Call Erik for me, please! Meet me in two hours in Jersey City, in the industrial area! I think I found something interesting, and grab all the equipment!"

"Wait, what?" Darcy started to ask, but Jane had already hung up. She hurriedly gathered her supplies, nearly forgetting her keys in the process.

Upon arriving at the industrial area of Jersey City, Jane climbed over a barrier and rushed toward the location she believed the markings to be. After a few minutes of searching, she spotted them. The symbols were still discernible, though the elements had weathered them. She gently brushed the carvings in the sand, wary of causing further damage.

Taking out her scientific equipment, which resembled a large cellphone with various icons, she held it over the carvings. It began to blink and beep erratically. Jane inhaled sharply. Was this real? Had she stumbled upon something significant? Just as she began to delve deeper, she heard a vehicle approaching and saw Erik's van pull into the compound.

"Hey! How did you pass the fence?" she asked, puzzled, as Erik and Darcy climbed out.

"We drove through it," Darcy said proudly.

"Really?" Jane's voice was laced with disbelief.

"Oh, come on. It's not like anyone's using this place, and I didn't feel like lugging around the heavy gear."
