The God of Mischief had landed a job at a prestigious law firm in no time, quickly proving himself to be a talented attorney. He had a knack for detecting when people were lying and knew precisely how to persuade them to sign documents against their better judgment. By the end of the month, he had received multiple job offers, but he wasn't interested in any of them; his primary goal was to maintain the illusion of his identity and establish credibility. He had arranged with the firm to only work two days a week, allowing him ample time to spend with Jane and return to Asgard at least once a week.

He explained to Jane that he had been out of town last month, a story she readily accepted. When they weren't working or when Loki wasn't visiting Asgard, they indulged in various human activities—dining at restaurants, going to the cinema, ice skating, and taking evening strolls. Jane even insisted on watching *E.T.* together, which made Loki laugh uncontrollably as he imagined his father on a bicycle saying, "Odin, phone home."

Over the past three months, he had learned a lot about Jane—her family history, her upbringing, and her aspirations. In return, he shared a fabricated story about his family, claiming they had died in a tragic airplane crash the previous year while coming to visit him from Europe. He explained that his brother had wanted him to attend his graduation party, but Loki had been unable to make it, resulting in the unfortunate incident.

"How did it happen?" Jane asked, concern evident in her eyes.

"Airplane crash," he replied, feigning sadness.

"All of them?" she pressed.

"Yes, they were on their way to see me, and I was too busy to go to them, so they came to visit me instead." He thought briefly about the coronation that was supposed to occur next year and quickly pushed it aside. "And then the plane crashed."

"That's horrible. I'm so sorry," she said, her voice trembling as tears threatened to spill from her eyes. Loki felt a pang of guilt for lying to her. Not wanting to dwell on the topic, he decided to change the subject. They were walking through Central Park on their way to his apartment, and he had been enjoying every moment with her more than he had enjoyed anything else in his long existence. Every accidental touch sent jolts through him, making his stomach flutter. He couldn't shake the thought: why did she have to be human? She would be gone in the blink of an eye.

"John?" Jane said as they reached the base of his skyscraper, looking up at him with anxious eyes.

"Yes?" He met her gaze, noticing her fidgeting with her hair, a clear sign of her uncertainty. Suddenly, he felt a rush of adrenaline, and his hands began to shake slightly. Her shy demeanor made his heart race.

"I—I wanted to say that—that—" she stammered.

"That you've fallen in love with me?" he teased, a smirk playing on his lips.

"What?" She blushed, her eyes wide with surprise. How did he know? This was definitely not the phrasing she had intended, but it was true. Oh God, this was embarrassing; she wanted to run away.
