K is for Kindergarten

For some reason, I can remember a lot about kindergarten, even though it was so long ago. I even remember step-up day, when I threw a fit because I didn’t want to leave a game. That year was kind of strange for me, since I was used to spending the whole day at home with my mom watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and now I was sitting in a hard blue chair learning my ABCs and colors, which admittedly I already knew, but still.

Some of my favorite things to do in that grade were the stations. We had little cards with our names on them, and at a certain time every day, we took them and went to different stations to play. From what I remember, there was a play kitchen with costumes for dressing up, tinker toys and legos and wooden blocks over on the alphabet rug, a sand table with a bunch of sand toys in it, and coloring, where you just sat at any table and could draw for the time given. I also remember basically everyone in the class fighting because they wanted to go to the play kitchen station and there was only 8 slots that could be filled. Thinking back on it, I don’t understand why everyone wanted to go there. The kitchen was too small for us, even though we were tiny kindergarteners, plus it was missing some pots and pans that would have made playing there a lot more fun. Also, I’m pretty sure I could have built bigger chairs out of the tinker toys.

Another thing I remember was my teacher always singing something after morning meeting each day. There was the pancake song, where you would lay down flat when she sang your name, there was also the song Singing In The Rain, but we would only sing it if it was raining outside. Morning meeting time was my favorite time of day because singing about elephants and pancakes and rain was far too amusing at the time.

Anyway, kindergarten was a fun year for me. I got to make friends that weren’t Dora and boots, I got to dislike for reasons other than the fact that they killed my favorite character. I finally got to interact with people that weren’t members of my family! Yay!

Life Lesson: I don’t know, make friends?
