He hoped that Avery had noticed he left and closed the door. He had no way of knowing. He was running. He didn't stop running until he couldn't see Avery's house anymore.
He stopped for a moment to catch his breath. He only just then realized that he was outside. And the Nasty's were all around him.
Oddly enough they weren't actually attacking him. They weren't even acknowledging him. Now that he thought of it they didn't attack him when he went out to run to Avery's.
He thought maybe they didn't notice him. Maybe he wasn't in their line of sight. Maybe. Or maybe they actually weren't dangerous. Maybe they really didn't care about us humans.
He quickly stopped thinking about the Nastys and thought of his brother. He thought of Avery's mom. How could she have disappeared if these creatures weren't actually dangerous?
He then thought about how Carly had just gotten attacked and realized that they must just not be able to see him.
He was hidden behind an old play structure. He once again thought about how Avery's door was left open. He felt regret. He figured that he would have to go back and make sure that Avery's door was closed. But then he was going to find his brother, and maybe even Avery's mom.
Cole was running when he felt strong hands pulling him down. They weren't letting go. Cole struggled to break free.
He had no injuries but if he was there for a second longer his arm would have been ripped off.
He could see Avery's house. The door. It was closed. But there was absolutely no way he was getting back into that house.
The door was completely swarmed with the creatures. Avery wouldn't have let him in anyway. She was filled to the brim with anger. Red hot anger. It bubbled over her like a tidal wave. Of course she didn't expect much more from Cole. He was always letting her down. In the 8th grade he was supposed to take her to a dance. Minutes before the dance he told her he couldn't make it. He said he would make it up to her. He still hasn't.
She thought maybe he would later at another dance. Nope. He was to hung up on Veronica HeilStorm. She was such a rude girl. Not only to Carly but to everyone who was friends with her dearest Cole.
Avery sat alone in her house. Not a peep came from Carly. She was worried. After Cole had caused a huge scene and ran outside leaving the door open, Carly had passed out. She wouldn't wake up. She was turning. The saliva must have gotten into the crevices of the wound. Avery couldn't do anything to help her now.
Nasty's were banging on the door. There were at least 4. Banging to get in. Avery sat in the corner of the kitchen and bawled. She not only bawled because her dear sister was turning before her very eyes but because Cole would soon be in the same boat as Carly.
Cole stood with fear radiating from his body. If the Nasty's could smell fear then he would sure be dead. He had a million ideas of how to get in the house. Most of them were stupid so he went with the most likely to work one.
He walked over to Avery's cellar door. It was always covered with various vines, plants, dirts, and whatnot. He only knew about it because he used to sneak out of his house and go through the cellar. Him and Avery would hang out there for hours doing who knows what. The only way into the cellar from Avery's house was to go inside Avery's closet and find the secret door. He parents didn't even know about it. It was a complete secret.
Cole began searching through his memories for the word password that Avery had set.
He carefully slid the letters into place. B.F.N.M.W. It stood for Best Friends No Matter What. Cole wished that that would have come into play now. That's what he needed. Cole slid open the cold metal lock. It was a bike lock. That's all they could find. It opened. It didn't open easily but it opened. He carefully opened the two doors hoping that it wouldn't let out a loud ear ripping screech. It didn't. Cole began crawling down the old ladder. He latched the doors shut. He wasn't gonna make that mistake again.
As he crawled down memories flooded back to him. Memories of old battle ship games. Memories of many fights caused from monopoly. Those were the good days when he didn't have to worry about a thing. He didn't have to worry about protecting his brother.
He stopped thinking about the good days and cold hard reality hit him. He needed to find the other door. He needed to find Avery. He needed to apologize until the words i'm sorry don't even sound like words.
He walked towards the the door that led to the back of Avery's closet. He started to gently apply pressure on the old board that was the divider between the closet and the cellar. He could feel the board holding on to the rotted wood. Just a little more pressure the thought.
He was almost through when the door came to a stop. There was a revolting smell coming from behind the board. He pounded his fist into the door until whatever was causing the smell tumbled to the ground. He was in the house. He looked at the thing that fell on the ground and put his hand over his mouth. He instantly felt nauseous.
