Ch. 4

To Edoras      OR      The Awakening

Ch. 4

“Legolas.” I opened my eyes and turned towards Aragorn. He had already woken Gimli.

“What?” I asked, my voice low. He pointed to the surrounding forest.

“Something walks among the trees. It is no beast.” Even my eyes could barely pierce the gloom of Fangorn. I stood up, motioning for the others to do so as well. As I peered through the mist, I saw a figure of a man, surrounded by an aura of power.

“The White Wizard approaches.” I said softly. Aragorn’s eyes widened.

“Do not let him speak. He will cast a spell on us.” He pulled his sword out of its scabbard. “Ready your weapons. We must be quick.” he ordered. I grabbed my bow of the ground and reached for an arrow. Gimli, axe in hand, looked nervous. We gazed at the forest, wondering where he would appear. Suddenly, the figure appeared behind us. I loosed my arrow and reached for another, but it shattered on his staff. Gimli’s axe did no more damage than my arrow, and also shattered on his staff, while Aragorn’s sword flamed bright red and dropped to the ground.

“You are tracking the footsteps of two young hobbits.” the wizard said in a deep grumbling voice. The light that surrounded him was so bright that even I could not look at him.

“Where are they?!” Aragorn shouted, a hand over his eyes to protect them.

“They passed this way the day before yesterday. They met someone they did not expect.” He paused for a moment.  “Does that comfort you?”

“Who are you? Show yourself!” The light dimmed around the figure. I gasped and fell to my knees.

“Forgive me. I mistook you for someone else.” He smiled at me and motioned for me to stand.

“It cannot be. You fell.” Aragorn said incredulously.

“Through fire and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak, I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth.” His eyes looked far away, as if deep in thought. He looked more solemn than I had ever seen him. “Until at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead and everyday was as long as a life-age of the earth. I’ve been sent back until my task is done.” he finished.

“Gandalf!” Aragorn cried.

“Gandalf?” he mused. “Yes. That’s what they used to call me… Gandalf the Grey. That was my name.” he smiled a bit.

“Gandalf?” Gimli asked.

“I am Gandalf the White.” he said with a twinkle in his eye.

“The Hobbits.” I said, returning to our original subject. “Are they safe?”

“As safe as one can be in these times.” he replied. He turned around and motioned for us to follow.

“Gandalf, we can’t just leave.” I said. “Why ever not?” he asked me, confused. I pointed to the elf, still unconscious, lying on the blankets. He saw the bandages on her arm and leg.

“So we can’t.” he said, sounding disappointed.

“What do we do?” I wondered. “We sent our horses back to Edoras once we decided to travel through the forest. A place like this could easily injure them.” The roots in the forest stuck up through even the path, as if wanting to trip people, and the noises at night could spook anything, humans, dwarves, elves, and beasts alike. Gandalf nodded, lost in thought.
