The Darkness, an unspoken miasma of evil, choking and draining life from everything it consumed, enveloping it within its maws. But even Rasputin knew he had another threat. The Traveler was beginning to move, and put humanity on the precipice of doom. With fear for humanity, and even his distrust of the Traveler put aside, he executed protocol Midnight Exigent. It is unknown what this plan was, but in the lore of the Sleeper Simulant, it is said that it is still active. The best guess for this protocol was to anchor the Traveler, and hold it in place, to ensure that Humanity's last days are postponed. Above earth, the Traveler and it's Light fought the Darkness, shaking the world, and reverberating across existence.
The Traveler won.
Though crippled and broken, it won against the Darkness. The Darkness receded. But, in its final moments, in death, the Traveler created the Ghosts. These machines are autonomous drones that are filled with its light, used to find Humanity's strongest to fight the Traveler's battle when it has already passed. These people were called the Guardians, people whom of which wielded the light and used it to push back against the Darkness and its minions.
The earliest known Guardians to exist were the Risen, a small group of people who survived the Darkness and the Collapse. These people banded together and formed camps, which then grew in size. This led to the formation of the Warlords, people who believed themselves to be the only ones capable to wield the light and use it for bad and selfish reasons. These were savage people.
