I struggled to sleep. It was like my mind had gone into overdrive again. I had a sickly feeling in my gut and I laid in bed just staring at the smallest bit of light coming in through the window.
My pillow smelled like Eric. Everyone had their own individual smell, and his stifled my senses. I ended up without anything under my head. I threw the pillow on the floor in an emotional outburst of tears.
I slept restlessly for a few hours, then ended up in the shower at seven. I scrubbed myself harder than I should have, like I was trying to scrub away any feeling and thoughts, and my skin had become red and sore. It hurt when the small beads of water from the shower splattered onto my body and I began to sob again. I felt so torn between right and wrong, and the truth and the things in my head.
By eight o'clock I found myself hesitantly stood outside of Angelina's apartment. I'd knocked at Eric's but he wasn't in... and for some reason I had a feeling that he would be with Angelina.
I knocked softly, my hand shaking a little, and Angelina opened the door a few moments later.
"Jac?" She looked surprised to see me. "What are you doing here?"
"I um... I need to find Eric. Have you seen him?"
"He's in here. Come in." She stepped to the side and I hesitated before sliding past her. She would have known about Nathan's death too. My stomach churned at the thought of it. "Brains, you've got a visitor!"
Angelina shut the door, then walked around the corner into the main part of the apartment. I slowly followed, and saw Eric sat with his feet up on the coffee table beside Jay who was shirtless and pointing to a tattoo on his side.
"Jac. What are you doing here?" He questioned and slowly stood up. "Are you okay?"
"Can I have a word?" I asked.
He nodded.
"In private.." I added.
"Kitchen." Angelina told us, then started to pick up some bits of paper from the table that Eric had previously had his feet on. "Ten minutes then we need to leave, Brains."
"Yeah, alright." He replied to her, then led me into the kitchen. He pushed the door shut behind us, then looked at me, his brows furrowed.
"What's wrong?" He questioned.
I opened my mouth, then shut it again. I'd not thought about how I would ask about this, I had no idea what to say now that I was here.
"Jac?"
I blinked a few times and stared at him, then finally found the words to say. "Are Divergent's a big concern to the Dauntless leaders?"
He looked a little confused. "Erudite have brought it to our attention that a few may have slipped under our noses, though most appear to be in Abnegation or with the Factionless. Divergent's are a danger to our society."
"It's just Talulah said something to me last week, and Freddie reminded me yesterday. And well, um..."
"What?"
"What do you do if you come across a Divergent?"
"Max and Stephen take care of them."
I swallowed, my throat dry. "They kill them don't they?"
He nodded.
I let out a shaky breath, then continued. "Talulah said that Nathan was a Divergent."
He didn't look surprised at all.
"You were already aware of that?"
"Yeah. Someone tried to help him conceal it, but his times and techniques in the landscapes gave us confirmation of what he was."
