Love in a Briefcase- Prologue.

Edited.

Jade Harper gulped down shots after shots of vodka. She knew that she would regret it and the hangover would not be a part of fun the next day but she could not care less. She was relaxing and letting herself go for once. Her body was free from the usual tension and she was loosening up.

Her mother had been pestering her about finding a husband. Jade did not understand, after all, she was only twenty-nine. But, for Mrs. Harper, when a woman was still single by her thirtieth birthday, she would most probably end up alone in a house with thirty four cats as her only companions. Jade always thought that her mother was exaggerating. Twenty-one cats only would have been enough.

She could not help but feel irritated by her mother's behavior. Jade's younger sister, Amy, had just gotten married few months ago and since then, her mother had harassed her with things related to marriage. Every time she would go to the family house to visit her parents, she would be instantly having bridal magazines thrown at her. Every single conversation turned to marriage.

Jade was frustrated as her family would arrange dinners for her with several guys who often turned out to be total jerks. Even though Amy had gotten married did not mean that Jade wanted the same thing. When she was finally allowed to have a boyfriend, Amy had not lost time and had gone out with almost all the guys in her entire high school at that time. Few years ago, she had met Tommy, now her husband, and after two years, they had both decided that it was finally time for them to exchange rings.

Jade was more of the always-strict-and-not-one-to-have-fun type. In college, when her roommates were going to parties, she would lock herself in her dormitory room and finish her homework, which was to be submitted in two weeks, or read books. Her education was one of the things which were the most important to her. So, no time for fun.

Jade's mother had repeated several times that Jade would not  end up alone. But Mrs. Harper could not change her daughter's mind. She was convinced that she did not need a man to feel whole. Independence was something that Jade could not and would not ban from her life. For her, the world was now a modern one where women did not need to get married to achieve success.

What was marriage after all? It was only signified by a piece of paper with two mess-like signatures which proved that two persons agreed to stay together but after a few years, they would simply realize that they were not made for each other and then, they left for different paths. Jade did not see marriage as an agreement. No, she saw it as a contract to the devil himself.

People could call her cold-hearted or even heartless. But, it is always better to be heartless than to be heartbroken right? She had had her fair share of hook-ups and love affairs but was not willing to try a real relationship. She only slept with those guys as one night stands as not only men had needs, women had too.

One other reason as to why she did not want a man would be that she did not need one. What did mothers want for their daughters? Money? Success? Popularity? She had it all.

She did not need a clingy, possessive and demanding man who would only bring her down. She did not want to be the one who waited for her husband to come home while he was out getting laid by some slut.
