Stay with me by Sam Smith on the side!
Love In a Briefcase- Chapter 10
Edited.
Disappointment and unexpected sadness submerged her when she woke up to an empty bed. Alejandro was not there; just the slightly creased white sheets on his side.
Was it how he had felt when she had left him four months ago?
She let out a sarcastic snort. What was she expecting? She deserved it; she deserved all the sadness that filled her heart when she saw that he was not there.
She sighed and got out of the bed, half dragging herself to the bathroom where she did her business before getting in the shower. Even in there, her thoughts were filled with Alejandro. How they did it God knows how many times. How he made sure to cherish every part of her body and satisfied her in many ways. But, the happy and passionate feelings disappeared when she remembered that he was gone.
She stepped out of the shower, wrapped a towel around her body and her hair, and quickly went to her closet to choose some clothes.
Forty-five minutes later she arrived at the law-firm and Adam greeted her as usual.
"Good morning Miss Harper." She took her much needed coffee and nodded in acknowledgement.
"Mr Martinez told me to notify you about his absence today. He was forced to take a day-off because of personal matters."
So, he was absent?
She could not help but wonder if he was avoiding her. It would not surprise her after what he did this morning. She knew that she did the same thing four months ago, but was it necessary for him to take his revenge and do the same thing. The sadness was now long gone and was replaced by anger and irritation.
Yes, she was angry; angry because he could still hold a grudge and treat her like that. Was he a coward? Did he just think that she could be a could lay for one night, in her case, two nights and then disappear in the morning?
No, no and no! She would not accept that. She would tie the man to a chair if it was necessary but she wanted answers. Did she really deserve that horrible treatment?
"Okay, Adam. Any appointment scheduled for today?"
"No, just some paperwork."
"Great, thank you Adam" She then took the elevator, her thoughts still bugging her, and made her way to her office. She closed the door after her, made her way around her desk and sat down. Her head was already hurting from all these sudden feelings since this early morning.
At eight thirty in the afternoon she went home as there were not many things to do today. It was surprisingly raining. It was a rare occurrence for rain to fall in L.A but when it fell, it would not stop for a few hours. The weather reminded her of her mood. Alejandro was still on her mind but she managed to cope with it and tame down her anger so that she did not take it out on her employees. She did not receive any call from Alejandro during the whole day. At this point, she did not know what to think.
At the apartment, she showered and changed into booty shorts and an oversize t-shirt. She usually slept in nighties as she liked to feel sexy, yes, even when sleeping and though she did not have a lover to dress for. But, she honestly thought that women could dress up to please themselves, not anybody else. Tonight, though, she just wanted to feel comfortable and watch cheesy soap operas while munching on some popcorn and cuddling with a pillow.
She was just about to put the popcorn into the micro-wave when there was a knock on the door.
Who could it be at this time of the day?
She made her way to her front door an opened it to reveal a very wet and messy looking Alejandro. She had never seen him like that. He was wearing jeans and a simple t-shirt and he was dripping wet from the rain outside. His hair was going in all directions and he seemed exhausted. Without forgetting that his eyes were red and puffy and that his breathing was a little heavier than normal.
Had he been crying?
Jade just looked at him with wide eyes. What was he doing on her doorstep?
"Can I come in? I didn't know where to go apart from here." Thinking that he might get sick, she immediately ushered him in and went to look for some towels for him. No matter how angry she was with the guy, she could not let him die with things such as pneumonia or hypothermia. Okay, maybe she was exaggerating a bit. But, the point was that he could get sick, and she did not want that to happen.
He was still near the door when she returned with two large towels and a t-shirt and boxers, that belonged to her father and that he had left here for when he visited. She tried to dry him. She doubted that he could do it himself, the man just seemed like he was in some sort of daze; lost in his own thoughts.
When she finished, she handed him the clothes but he did not take them.
She cleared her throat, "Go change before you get sick. Bathroom is the first door on the right."
That seemed to snap him back to reality because he nodded and followed her directions.
Jade let out a sigh. What would she do now? The man who had left her alone after a fantastic night together was there, in her bathroom, changing. But, she could not feel any of the previous anger towards him at that time as Alejandro looked so broken and she knew that though they were not that close emotionally, she had to comfort him.
She heard the pitter-patter of bare feet on the wooden floor and looked up to find Alejandro standing there with his wet clothes and shoes in hands. She came up to him and gently took the clothes from him. She murmured a 'wait here' and went to put them in the washing machine. Ursula could just put them in the dryer the next morning so that Alejandro could get them when he decided to go home.
She went back to Alejandro and asked him,
"Would you like to stay here for the night? Your clothes will be clean by tomorrow morning."
"Please." He agreed. She led him to the first guest's room.
"Here" He sat down on the bed with his head down and let out a sigh. Jade approached him.
"What's wrong?" She asked. He just looked at her with those beautiful green eyes that held so much sorrow. When she noticed that his eyes were getting watery, she sat down next to him and hugged him tightly,
"Hey, shh, don't worry, I'm sure that whatever is wrong will be fine. Everything will be alright. Just get a good night sleep and everything will get better tomorrow, I promise."She pulled back to look in his eyes and he nodded. She got up as he lay down and she tucked him in like a small child. He looked at her with those sad green eyes and she could not resist. She planted a feather-like kiss on his forehead and was about to turn around and walk away when his hand grabbed hers.
"No, don't go. Please stay with me tonight." He said, almost pleadingly as she tried hard to just walk away, telling herself that she could not develop feelings for him. But looking at him now and seeing how broken he looked, she simply nodded. He made space for her and she lay down next to him. She expected him to just lay on his side but she was surprised when she could actually feel him breathing on her neck. His front was pressed to her back and he put an arm around her holding her close.
They were actually spooning and it felt...nice. Maybe different but it felt good.
She relaxed in his arms and said,
"Goodnight Alejandro." And then she fell asleep when she did not hear him reply. After a moment, he kissed her cheek and whispered,
"Buenas noches mi amor."
