"Just ignore her." Holly stage whispered to me. I nodded furtively, though my heart had plummeted down into my boots. I knew that if Danny saw this he would go mental. He checked my Facebook regularly, just to make sure there was no online flirting going on, and that I was only uploading "safe" pictures. I rolled my eyes at him at first, but then I bowed my head and let him get on with it.
I looked back at the computer screen. There were two more comments on the picture, from Macy Read and another one from Lola.
Fat girl. I'm surprised she actually has a boyfriend at all.
I know right?! He must have to squint whenever he looks at her.
I blinked back tears. How could they say that about me? They knew nothing about my - gulp - relationship with Danny. Besides, I knew I wasn't fat. I was perfectly average for my age. I pulled my hand furiously over my eyes, fighting the saltwater that was threatening to pour my cheeks.
"Everything all right girls?" Mrs Brown, the eagle eyed ICT teacher had swooped down on us and was peering over Holly's shoulder. I quickly closed the window without bothering to log off.
"Oh yes Miss!" Holly beamed brightly.
"You know that we only allow social networking on the grounds that you don't use it for cyber bullying. Nothing like that has been happening, right girls?" Mrs Brown hissed, arching one of her eyebrows.
"No Miss." I said, though I saw Holly throw me a suspicious glance.
"Let's go Holly." I slung my bag over my shoulder and Holly trotted after me.
"What are you doing?" Holly asked. "If you just ignore Lola and her cronies, it will get worse."
"I know what I'm doing Holly!" I snapped. "There's no point confronting her, it will all blow over."
"I doubt it! She will just keep bitching about you, Becky, and she won't stop."
"Seriously Holly, just let me deal with this!" I pleaded. "I know what to do about this."
Holly's shoulders slumped.
"Fine!" she retorted. "But remember I don't approve." She turned and stalked away.
"This isn't about you!" I yelled after her. She ignored me, and carried on down the corridor. Sighing, I trudged to class, my heart heavy.
I flopped down on my seat in Science and looked across the room at Holly. She was pulling her pencilcase out of her bag and delibaretly not looking at me. I sighed.
"Hey, Becky?" I turned around and saw Charlie, the class nerd.
"Yeah?" I replied half heartedly. Charlie blinked furiously behind his thick glasses.
"Umm...are you okay?" He flushed a violent shade of crimson. I smiled despite myself at his painful shyness.
"Yeah, just...friend problems." I rested my head on my hand and rubbed my temples.
"What happened?" Charlie asked curiously. I looked at his pink, spot ridden face.
"Nothing." I sighed. "You wouldn't understand."
I glanced across the room at Holly again. She looked disgusted that I had been talking to Charlie. I turned my back on him. Mr Berty, our science teacher, clapped his hands enthusiastically and began talking about bunsen burners. I closed my eyes and daydreamed about when my parents were going to come home. Dad would hold out his arms and I would run to him, like I used to do when I was three years old. He would kiss the top of my head and call me his little princess. But when I looked up at him, his face was Danny's. I started out of my daydream, and felt cold sweat dewing on my forehead.
"Miss Jackson?" Mr Berty pursed his lips questioningly, "Do you have something to add to our discussions?"
"No, sir." I replied quickly. He rolled his eyes and carried on with the lecture on safety while using bunsens. I dragged my hand across my forehead, and hoped no one had seen me.
