A City Without Streetlights

Streetlights do not sell anything, so they do not exist. All around me walking, activated neon runs. Light, sure, but a greedy light that only shines upon itself. Some of it runs through lettering. (None of it runs down to the streets.) Framed by store-front windows and spelling 'closed'. Some of it runs through television screens. (None of it runs down to the streets.)Great billboards with moving pictures, blotted by the shadow of a lamppost tagged for removal. They show beautiful people endorsing athletic shoes, but not the shards of ghostly glass which would make me want to pay such sums just to cover my feet. It shows listings of insurance plans, which I cannot afford. So I hope that I won't trip.
