It hasn't even been a day. Not. Even. A. Damn. DAY. And Kaiden and Evers are already bickering like children in a playground. It was so unbelievable watching their first interaction with each other. Granted, Kaiden's reason for not liking Evers was because of the twisted things he did to Marina, but the way I see it, we need his help and members of his pack to help us out with Jack, and that is most definitely not going to happen when either of them can't stand to be in the same room as each other."Yeah well at least your brother is better company to keep. Unlike your sorry high maintenance ass." Evers crosses his arms over his chest and reclines against his desk, shooting a look to Kaiden.
Amber eyes roll as Kaiden readies his reply, "Yeah, well, my sister would have been even better company than Eben and I combined, but you wouldn't know that because you don't have the damn balls to tell your father no."
The air gets thicker as Evers take a second to process this jab. He's about to retort when Kaiden continues, "That's Marinas mark you wear, not that leech you--"
"Kaiden that is enough." I can't stand to hear the bickering. And while I'm on Kaiden's side, and already don't like Evers because of the pain he caused Marina, we are here for a reason. "Alpha Evers is kind enough to let us stay, and help us with this problem that we are having, he even let Eben stay here. Let's not forget that."
I shift my gaze to Evers, "If you don't mind, Kaiden and I are just gonna get some rest. The drive was long, and I'm pretty sure I speak for us both when I say that we're exhausted."
"Of course Amelia, I'll have my Luna show you too your room."
Kaiden snarled, "The hell she will."
I shake my head, "Thank you, but I think it would be best if someone else showed us. We mean no disrespect, but seeing as how this is a pretty...tense...topic, I'd much rather avoid unnecessary conflict." He gave me a looked the conveyed he understood, and if I am being honest he looked almost relived that he didn't have to call on the Luna, whoever she may be.
"Of course," He looked to his left where his Beta stood, "Lark, please show Alpha and Luna Maddox to their room, then show Reggie to his."
With a nod we were being escorted out and to our rooms for the time being.
Reggie let out a laugh, "Well that was fun."
***************************************
Kaiden and Reggie have been gone for hours with Evers discussing plans for days to come, so what do I do? I meander around.
After about 5 minutes of walking and wandering I come across this field of flowers, which seems incredibly out of place here in the high mountains of Southern California. But nevertheless, I sit and make myself comfy with the book I had brought with me to read.
About 20 or so minutes of losing myself in the words of Jane Austen, I hear a rustle in the flower bushes. I look up and through the thicket of leaves and flowers steps a gorgeous girl, and an equally handsome guy. She's got the blackest hair I've ever seen, and it's piled in a messy bun with curls spilling out every which way. A look that on any other person would look crazy, but in her enhanced her face and youthfulness, and light brown eyes that seem to gleam in the sun. The guy had shaggy blonde hair and crisp blue eyes, the kind that pierce your soul and make you feel like he knows everything about you, though he has the features of an angel, there's a roughness about him with the way he stands, shielding the girl with his body.
Why the fuck are werewolf's so attractive man? Like what is it? That's definitely not fair.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here." It's not a question, it's a statement. His voice dripping with authority.
I can't help but stare wide eyed and stunned, but before I can open my mouth for a meak response, the girl moves from behind him and places a hand on his arm.
"Daniel, relax. She's alpha Maddox's mate."
She walks over to me and smiles, "Hi, I'm Cassidy....I'm the Luna of this pack" she stretches out a hand to shake.
I cautiously reach my hand out and partake in what I can only count as a insanely lame and awkward handshake. Squinting my eyes, I look between her and the Daniel guy trying to piece together why she's not with Evers, and then it hits me, Daniel is her true mate.
Well butter a biscuit and call me grandma, we should've brought Marina.
"So..."
"Please don't tell Evers." She begs. Her eyes pleading with a force I've never seen. The guy—Daniel—walks up behind her and soothingly rubs a hand up and down her arm.
I know I shouldn't like her, but for some reason I can't bring myself to.
"Don't worry....I..he won't know."
She gives me a grateful smile and turns to Daniel, "I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?"
His eyes move from hers to mine, then back to hers, "Okay, Cassy. I'll see you tomorrow, I love you." He steps forward and places his hand on the nape of neck, and pull her in for what has to be the most tender and gentle kiss I've ever seen. I kind of felt like I should leave and let them have a moment. But as soon as the kiss started, he pulled away and Cassidy both watched his retreating back as he walked.
She turned to me then, "Well, it's nice to finally meet you." She extends a hand out for me to shake. "Evers told me you would be coming, can I ask you a question?"
I nod as she comes to take a seat beside me in the thicket of leaves and grass.
"How is Marina? She and I used to be inseparable. That was when our packs were a lot closer allies.." She has hurt evident in her eyes, "then Evers' father made him chose between me and her, and..well I'm sure you know the rest."
I look down at my book, then look up, staring directly ahead. "She's okay. She could be a lot better, it's like she's got this whole in her missing and nothing can fill it."
"Except for Evers?"
I nod, "Yea, except for him."
"I regret it. Everyday of my life. But I had to." She tugs at the rubber band holding her hair up, and it comes tumbling down like an dark black avalanche of curls. "There is a great pain in losing your mate. But the pain of them losing their life is unimaginable. Evers and i both did it for Marina."
I am not really sure how to respond, this is the first time Im meeting her. And i know I should hate her for what she did to Marina, but with the amount of sorrow in her eyes, I'm not sure I can.
"Why can't Marina know?"
She exhales a breathy laugh, "Because both Evers and I care too much about her safety. And we know that if she knew the truth she'd try something drastic."
Although I kind of got the idea of what "the truth" was, I wanted to hear it.
"What would have happened if Evers chose her?"
"His father is as old school as they come, if he thought someone wasn't fit enough for the position of Luna—like he did with Marina—he would have her killed." She looks at me then, "So you see, I didn't do this to gain anything. Because truth be told I lost everything. I did this to save my friend."
"But...but you get to see your mate. Evers doesn't get the luxury of seeing Marina." I say to her, frustrated with this whole ordeal.
She chuckled at this, "Thats because Evers did what he knows best. He broke her heart. And she vowed to never see either of us again. It's worked. I found out Daniel was my mate only a bit ago."
We were both silent for a while. Then she spoke again, "I hope one day to tell her everything. To ease the pain from her."
"Yea," I nod, "I hope so too."
Kaiden, we've got some more work to do.
