Prologue
I stretch my arms up high into the air above me. Today is the last day of school before we get out for winter break. My last winter break of high school. I can't wait because my parents and I are planning to visit my sister Scarlett in New York. I've never been so this is a pretty exciting day for me. Scarlett is a pretty well-known model, so it'd be hard to work around her schedule, but we're her family, she'll make time for us.
Scarlett is my twin sister and two years ago an agent from New York was visiting his sister in our small town, Mill Valley, and he discovered Scar. He had a contract all signed up for her, but my parents we're very anxious and unsteady about the whole thing. After a whole lot of convincing, my parents decided to let her go, only because we have an Aunt in New York. She's crude, but she's still a relative that Scarlett could live with, so Scar just sucked it up because modeling is her dream.
So for going on two years, my sister/best friend has been living in New York City.I have to say though, I am envious sometimes, considering she's living the fast life, but I love my small town. I have great friends here, my family is here, where Scar has to live with our bitchy Aunt Mel. Who's the real winner here?
I hear soft knocks on my door and I reply a chirpy "Come in!" opening slowly, reveals my mother. Well my adoptive my mother. Me and Scarlett are adopted. We also have a brother who is my parents' birth son and is amazing and he's studying at NYU.
We don't exactly know the whole story on how it happened, but all I know is that, my adoptive parents begged the agency we were put through to not split us up. My parents said they only met my biological parents once. It was the usual adoptive kids' story where the parents weren't stable enough, bla bla bla. I have no intention on finding them, but Scarlett on the other hand, wants too. The only thing keeping me from doing that is hurting my parents feelings. They're the best people in the world, and me wanting to go find them is considered disrespectful. So as for right now, I'm happy with the people who care about me.
"Hey Ria, are you excited?" my mom asked.
"Of course! I can't wait to spend Christmas in New York!" I exclaim.
"Me too, I miss my other baby girl," she says with a pout.
"And we get to see Jonathan!" I say. Jonathan is my brother, but he's not adopted like me and Scar, and he's a sophomore at NYU.
"Yes, it's going to be a big family reunion," she says. She looks around my room, noticing I'm still in bed, "Well, time to get dressed, you got a big day ahead of you. Have you packed?" she asks curiously.
"Yes..." I trail off. I've been so busy with finals and cheer and my job at Cherry Berry, frozen yogurt, that I totally forgot to.
My mom raises her eyebrows suspiciously, "Did you really?"
I let out a loud huff, "I'll do it as soon as I get home!"
"Alexandria Braden!" she chastises me, using my full name.
"I'm sorry, I've been so busy with school, work, and cheer!"
"I expect it to be done by five," she warns me, then shuts the door, leaving me to my silence. I oblige and decide to get ready for school, considering it's my last day, we have finals... So there's honestly no point in dressing up. I quickly get dressed and I fix my messy, bedhead hair. Walking downstairs, I see my father reading the newspaper with a coffee cup in his hand. He looks up to me and smiles, "Ready for school?" he ask humbly.
