Genevieve’s POV

“And checkmate!” said Niall knocking down my king for the 4th time in a row. His cute Irish accent echoing through the kitchen.

“Seriously? Why do I suck at chess? Play again? I bet I can beat you.” I said setting up the pieces.

“Fine. It’s not like we have places to go!” he yelled down the hall. Already taking out half of my pawns. “She has been getting ready for hours! What takes so long to get ready for a date? He already knows what she looks like without makeup, no need to impress him now”.

I reached across the table and pushed his shoulder. Niall was one of my best friends. I had dragged him over to my cousin Maddie’s house when she asked me to help her get ready for her date. She was dating my other best friend Liam. I introduced them to each other at my 19th birthday party last year and ever since then they were like two peas in a pod.

“It’s the whole idea of it Niall. It’s a date, not some movie night where they stay in watching comedies in sweats. That’s what we do and that is definitely not a date” I explained to him, losing my queen to his horse.

“So how do I look?” she asked standing in the doorway.

I looked up from our chess game and let out a loud gasp. She looked gorgeous. She was wearing a short navy dress that went in at the waist. A pearl bracelet sat on her wrist and a pair of black pumps on her feet.

“Stunning!” I said getting up from the breakfast nook and going over to hug her.

Since she was close to being 9 inches taller than me I had to reach up to give her a hug; and the tall pumps didn’t help either. But our bodies soon found the familiar hug that we knew all so well. We were each other’s only family. We were from such a small family in the first place that Maddie and I had grown up best friends. At the age of 9 Maddie was visiting my house for a family get together. We had both left the house to walk to the park when the fire had started. It had trapped both our families inside the house. As soon as I turned 18 I moved to London to start a new life, dragging Maddie out of the orphanage with me. I was her Legal guardian for 6 months till she turned 18 herself. That’s when we met Niall and Liam and our life began to look better. Niall had moved to London that year also to study at the University of London.

“You’ve looked better” said Niall snapping me out of my nightmare.

I let go of Maddie and gave him another punch in the shoulder.

“Oh crap! Look at the time! I’m going to be late again. I've got to get going. Feel free to stay at my house as long as you like while I'm gone.” She said grabbing her purse off the counter and heading out the door.

“She’s got to get better at managing her time. Checkmate” he said wiping out my king again.

“How did that even happen?” I asked knocking over the remaining pieces from the board. “I bet I can beat you at Call of Duty”.

“You’re on” he said getting up from his chair and racing me to the TV.

Maddie’s POV

I ran into my car and turned on the engine. I had never been one for being on time. My phone buzzed and I looked down towards it, trying to keep my eyes on the road, my dirty blond hair that I straightened not that long ago was flapping in the wind of the open window.

-You’re an hour late! Where are you?? I’ve been sitting at the table for a while now and people are starting to stare-

It didn’t take me long to realize this was from Liam. I had always been late but never this bad. And I usually gave him a call to say how far behind I was. This time I completely forgot about phoning. I pushed harder on the gas trying to make up for lost time. I reached the restaurant within 15 minutes and parked the car quickly. When I reached the door I quickly fixed my hair in the mirror and made my way to our table. He was sitting there silently with his mildly curly dirty blond hair messy as always, and a plaid shirt done all the way to the top.

“I'm here!” I said running up to him. “Don’t be mad!”

“I'm not mad. Just glad that you are finally here. I already ordered for you; tacos because I know they're your favourite” he said giving me a big hug then sitting back down.

“I'm not sure how I am supposed to look attractive eating that but thank you” I replied sitting down on the opposite side of him.

“So I need to talk to you” he said.

“Those words can never be good” I said grabbing a piece of bread from the middle of the table and plopping it into my mouth.

“I have decided to go away on a trip to Africa” he said staring right at me waiting for my reaction.

“And when will this take place?” I asked. He was always one for coming up with crazy ideas and never going through with them.

                “Tomorrow”

I almost choked on my piece of bread when I heard what came out of his mouth

“Tomorrow?” I asked not knowing if I heard it right. “You’re leaving me to go on a trip to Africa tomorrow??”

“I know it’s sudden but I was offered a job there helping to build schools. Its only 4 weeks and it’s a great opportunity, something I would love to do.” He replied playing with his thumbs not looking me straight in the eye. “Is that ok with you?”

“If it’s something you want to do then I'm all for it!” I said as our food was set down on the table.

Except this was something I was completely and utterly not ok with. He has sprung this on me last minute and I was not sure if I could handle being away from him for so long. I think he could see the hurt in my eyes because he wouldn’t look directly my way for the rest of the night. I couldn’t wait for the date to be over.

If you could comment and tell me what you think it would be awesome :)
