Chapter 8, Tea and Tripwires

***Dani's point of view***

"You're doing great Lucy."

"I'm not doing anything. I'm just laying here, I kinda thought once the water broke, it would be all go.  The contractions are still so far apart. How long do you think it will be? Honestly? Do not lie to your alpha." She is giving me the death glare, but I know she's not serious. She's only 4 centimetres, she is going to be here all night, but do I tell her that?

“You’re dealing with the pain, and breathing just like we practised. Now you just need to rest inbetween contractions, like we discussed.... remember." Now it's my turn to give her the power stare, she is a great alpha and an even better friend, but she has about as much patience as a wildfire in dry grass.

"As you avoided my question, I'll assume I'm not going to be seeing my pups in the next hour?"

“It’s not likely, but it could happen. You're about halfway ready, but your waters broke about 5 hours ago, so it's hard to know. But I'm not going anywhere so don't worry."

"But I can't steal you away from your mate on your first night."

"Don't worry Lucy, honestly I'm kind of relieved I'm with you tonight."

"What? No, I thought you two were getting on so well .... You both looked so happy. What happened?"

"No, no, it's nothing like that, quite the opposite actually. I ... well .... you know, have you seen that chest?" Lucy starts to laugh. I think she knows what I mean.

"Ahhh, you're already in the 'being close to him makes you want to ... be closer' stage, I get that. When I first saw Alex I was practically drooling, and that was when I thought he was there to kill me. So, are you going to tell me? What happened? We saw you walk away from him a few times, and then we saw him lift you up like a doll but that's it, what on earth happened?" I was wondering how long it would take her to ask me.

"You were right, you were both right ok. I thought he was going to reject me, you know I thought that, but that didn't stop me from dreaming about him, or thinking about him non-stop, imagining what our life together could be like. So when I finally met him, I knew there would be no more dreams or fantasies. And it hurt. And it pissed me off. He laughed when he found out I was a doctor, I thought I could take the rejection, I thought I was ready, but after looking into his eyes, I couldn't take it, so I walked away before he could do it. But he followed me"

"Of course he did, like he was going to let you go once he found you- OW ... OW"

"Breathe, squeeze me hand if you need to."  I kneel on the bed and slip my hands into hers, this feels like a big one.

The bedroom door bursts open "Love, I was quick as I could be. Are you alright?" When Lucy opens her eyes, they grow huge and seem to twinkle, I wonder if my eyes do that when I see Jamie.

"I'll leave you two alone for a while, just call me if you need me, I'll be back in 15 minutes anyway." I let go of Lucy's hands and get off the bed, Alex takes over my position and I slide out of the door. 

I walk into the kitchen, it's going to be a long night and I will need all the caffeine I can find. Bernie is sitting at the back wall talking to a man I've not seen before.

"How is she doing?"

"She is doing great, but it's going to be an all-nighter." I open one of the cupboards, the one Lucy lets me keep my emergency medical equipment in, including my super strong tea, but it's not here. "Hey, have you seen my tea Bernie? I'm sure it was here earlier, where could it have go-"
