Chapter 22, Courage

***Lucy’s point of view***

I kissed each one of my babies before I let Aine, Bernie and the rest of their group go. I promised them I would see them soon. I made sure that I kept my tone full of joy, leaving no room for doubt that I would be with them again soon.

As soon as I could no longer see the evacuated pack members, I let all the emotions that I had been holding back, come to the surface. Apart from the fear, this wasn’t fear of the possible upcoming attack, or even of my possible death. This is the first time since they were born that I have had to be away from them. It feels like someone has just snatched away my lungs and then commanded me to carry on as normal.

But the rage I am feeling? That is quite present, in my posture, my voice and the energy that is coming off me. This is the first time any of my pack have seen my pre-fight alpha strength. And I can tell from the looks I’m getting, they were not expecting it. But this is the way it has to be. I’m letting my wolf come to the surface now, she has a say in what is happening, I’m hoping that when I shift into her skin she will allow me the same courtesy.

“Right, if we are trying to make this look like a regular party, at least some of you are going to have to seem like you’re having a good time. Can we get some music playing?”

Instantly the people around me relax a little, I know some of them were not fighters in their old packs and we are asking them to go up against rogues, it’s natural to be afraid, but that fear will be what get’s them killed. They need to feel like we are all a part of a team, that we know exactly what we are doing and that we will be there for one another. The easiest way to do that is to show them that Alex and I are unafraid of what’s to come, that we trust them to protect this pack.

Soon enough music is playing and groups of males and females are sitting together and doing what wolves love to do more than anything else, (well almost) eating.

“Al, does it look like a party yet?”

“A smaller one then Will would have been expecting, but the later he arrives, the more likely it will seem. If he arrives. Are we thinking clearly here Lu? What if he is a prisoner, getting the same treatment as the others, or laying dead somewhere? He could need me and I am here. Planning an attack against him.”

“Love, you are not attacking him, you are defending your pack. If we are not attacked tonight, then we will have to bring the fight to this prick, and we WILL find Will. Right now you need to focus on what’s happening here. Do we have guards set up under the tables? Do we have enough guards with the rest of the pack? Is there anything else we can be doing now?”

“You’re right Lu, ok. I have stationed a wolf under each table, all have been told to remain where they are unless they are spotted or we call for them. We have sent almost half of our guards with the pack Lu, they are as safe as we can make them. The only other thing I think we can do is wait, and conserve our energy.”

“Good. Now go eat with your men and make them feel brave.”

I grab my bag and run into the cover of the trees. I remove the beautiful dress I am wearing and pull on the spare clothes I brought with me. At least I can move properly in this. I know the longer I can stay in human form in a fight, the more afraid the wolves will be of me. I’ll take any advantage I can get.

***Jamie’s point of view***

“Jamie, what are you guys still doing here? I asked you both to go with the rest of the pack.”

“I know Alex, but before you order us, just hear us out.”

“I’m listening.” Alex looks to Dani when she starts speaking
