Chapter 28, The trial
***Lucy’s point of view ***
The day I have been dreading has finally arrived. All of our prisoners have either been freed or executed. All but one, today Alex and I have to decide on Will’s fate. After Matt told Alex everything that happened with Violet, I don’t know where I stand anymore. My mind still recognises will as a good person, but he made so many mistakes, big mistakes that cost people their lives.
Alex wants to believe that Will is still a good man, still his friend, but he remembers how betrayal tastes, his father used to feed it to him daily. He has so much hurt, I don’t know if he will ever be able to hold Will in the same light that he used to.
When I try to talk to Alex about it he changes the subject. But we really can’t wait any longer. We have done everything else we can do. Our wounded are getting treatment, our dead have been buried. We have even managed to find homes for all the children. We can’t avoid making this decision any longer.
Will is brought into the closed off tent. He keeps his head down, it breaks my heart to have to see him in silver, but then I look down at my growing babies, If we hadn’t figured out something was going on, they could have been killed. If that had of happened I would have killed Will long ago.
And there is the dilemma. He hasn’t asked to speak to either of us, he hasn’t tried to explain anything. The only person he has requested to see is Matt. Maybe he was waiting for today to talk to us, if that is the case, he waited too long, now there are other pack members, they are allowed to speak against him. We have to take what they say into consideration.
Alex stands up to speak. I can feel the concoction of emotions that Alex is feeling.
“Will, I want you to understand something, since you decided to leave this pack, we are not obligated to give you a trial, but you have been a friend to us in the past, I would ask you to respect that. I would like you tell us your side of the story, from as far back as it goes.”
“There is not much to say Alex, I betrayed you, I betrayed this pack. People died, it was my fault. I am willing to accept any sentence you pass down on me.”
“Do not think I will go easy on you because of our relationship.”
“I know that you won’t. I am guilty of everything, I told him when to attack, I told him where to attack, I told him where our weakest spot in the defences was, I even told him to keep his focus on you Alex.”
“Why though? I can see how much pain it causes you to say those words, why did you do it?”
“It doesn’t matter anymore. Don’t you care that I told him to keep his attention on you?”
“I know you Will, despite all you have done, I believe that you were trying to achieve something good. You are one of the smartest wolves I know, if you wanted me out of the way, you would have told him to focus on Lucy, she is the less experienced fighter and if she dies, I would die too, you know that. So you tell me, why did you want his focus on me?”
“Don’t ask me that Alex, I have confessed to my crimes and I’m ready to be punished for them. All you have to do is give an order and it will all be over.”
“I told you I wouldn’t go easy on you, now tell me, why did you get him to attack me and not Lucy?”
Will looks right at me, I can see the pain in his eyes.
“I didn’t want Lucy to get hurt.”
“If I died, she was going to die Will, so that’s not it, tell me the truth. Don’t make me force my way inside your mind to get you to talk.”
