Chapter 1

It was Joey and my turn to collect food for the tribe today and we didn’t find it fun, especially since we don’t get along very well, “Joey! Don’t collect berries because we don’t know what they are”, “I think they are blue berries.” “Just leave them alone, we need to find meat.” Joey was three years older then me, but he was also four years dumber then me, meaning I knew way more stuff then he did, he was so stupid and made unwise choices, he was tall and skinny and he had bright green eyes, he also had short brown hair, I was short with long black hair with dull blue eyes, sometimes I wish I was as tall as him and as good looking as him, but he was very dumb that’s why I didn’t want to be him or look like him, especially since I was a girl.

We were searching all through the forest, except we didn’t search for food around the tree of might because it was banned, people said it was coursed and if you ate from it you would become very sick and eventually die, but not in a normal way something different would happen. We had killed four wild pigs now and I was ready to go home but we needed more. It was becoming night now so I said to Joey, “Hurry it is getting dark and we need to get home.” Well of course he replied with, “Zoë, we need to kill one more wild pig before we can go home.” I said no more, we eventually found another pig, I readied my spear to strike, I aimed, pulled my arm back, then with all my might through the spear into the innocent pig’s head, the pig ran around for a few seconds more, our great ancestors told us on rock that it was their devil going to hell and their angel going to heaven, I didn’t know weather to believe it, but it was a quite a good possible answer, as we were walking home I told Joey I had to pee, I gave him my three pigs I was holding to, I went behind the tree to pee and there it was, the king of the forest, the big black bear, I screamed and Joey dropped the pigs and came to help me, luckily for me I had pulled up my cow hide so he couldn’t see anything, he said to me, “stand back sis, I got to kill my biggest enemy.” That was the other thing about Joey, he was brave and strong and would protect me over anything, even if it put his life in danger, and it was because he loved me. He wanted to kill the bear because he was old enough to become the next chief and we wanted just that.

He through if all the might he could and chucked the spear straight through the angry bear’s face, it fell straight down, our ancestors said the kings of the forests had no souls, which made them easy to kill and not as much of a threat. On the way back I had to carry all five pigs, this was because mister mighty was dragging his blood thirsty kill, he told me to walk to the tribe and get a congratulations, he was nice like that, then he asked me to say, “I present the almighty king killer”, so I did just that, I walked in and everyone said what a wonderful job I had done, then of course they asked me where Joey was, that was when I said my line, “I present the almighty king killer”, they all gasped and then Joey walked in with the massive, fat, over sized king of the forest, everyone grabbed him and chucked him up in the air continually, I sat down and watched, he disserved his own time with them because he had just killed one of the king’s of the forest, he then said, “Wait, if it wasn’t for Zoë,” I looked up at him, “We wouldn’t have found the bear.” The head chief (our father) then said, “Tonight we celebrate, tomorrow we search.” This meant we would all go hunting for food since we were going to have a feast.

When night came Joey had to cook the bear because he killed it, but the pigs the chef cooked because they were normal food, at the table father asked Joey if the bear fell straight to the ground, Joey replied with, “yes it did father, it fell straight face first into the dirt, no second chance for it.” Father started to laugh and say, “That’s my boy,” then we all started laughing, the night was long and the love lasted forever, We hand to pack up before midnight, that was because the Wild Dogs would come to our tents and camp and take any leftovers including us. Once we had finished tea, Joey and I went out and put the bones in the bushes and closed all the hide tents, we then all hoped into our tents and shut them with sticks so the dogs couldn’t get in, luckily for us no one snored so we were safe, our dad was big and tall he has black hair and brown eyes.

In the morning we peaked our heads through the doors of the hide tents to check if there were any unwelcome visitors, it was fine so we got out and went hunting because we had partied that night, at the end of the search me and Joey ended up with eight pigs and all the other tribe members together got fourteen pigs, we had done a really good hunt, we had a months worth of food in one morning, at launch it was blue berries, which the chef picked because he is the only one who can tell the differences between the berries.

Somehow while we were sitting there I managed to bring the topic up of “over the hills”, it was what was beyond the hills of were we lived, everyone believed it was the end of the world, but I thought there would be more land because there were no more people around us, just our tribe and our people, the tribe members thing I’m stupid, “there is no land over the hills” they say but I just ignore it and continue to eat, “one day I will prove to you that there is land past the hills,” I say to them all, they just crack up laughing.

It wasn’t long before I was going to prove it, I was old enough to do my own stuff now and I was going to take Joey with me to get over the hills and prove it once and for all whether it was the end of the world.
