The trio led us through street after street, in a seemingly random fashion. Eventually, we arrived at a building that most likely once used to be grand. Now, though, it was old and only three letters remained from the original name, “M”, “J” and “N”.
Martin opened the door for us and we all filed in. The inside of the building wasn’t much better than the outside, but it was a little nicer.
“Wait here,” Martin said, and he and Douglas went into a room in the back. Arthur stayed with Brent and I.
We stood in silence for a few seconds till –
“So,” Arthur said, seemingly excited. “Interesting stuff, eh?”
I frowned slightly. “Not… Not really, no.”
“Oh, well I was thinking earlier when Douglas and Martin were talking that it was a bit weird to see other people. Normally, well, recently, I’ve only been seeing Douglas and Martin and mum. Seeing other people for the first time in a long time is absolutely brilliant!”
“Oh, dear. All this time with only three other people has made you mad, hasn’t it?” I asked him.
He frowned a little and then laughed. “What? No, it really is brilliant! I mean, you guys are aliens! How often do you get to say that?”
“Quite often, actually. And Brent isn’t technically an alien. He’s human too, only from Earth about 600 years ago.”
“And you.”
“… Alright, I’m an alien.”
“Brilliant!”
“Do you know any other adjectives?”
“Well, yeah, but ‘brilliant’ is just…”
“Brilliant?”
“Exactly!”
Before our chat could continue, Martin and Douglas returned with a woman. She looked very stern.
“What, these are the people who want to - ?” She asked.
“Yes, what’s so odd about them?” Martin asked.
“Martin, they’re children!”
“For your information,” I interjected, “I am much older than all of you combined. Maybe. Okay, not combined, but… still older!”
“No you’re not,” Arthur said.
I looked at him. “Yes I am.”
“No, but, you’re not. You can’t be. You’re short!”
“Hey!”
“Back to business, children,” the woman, Carolyn, interjected.
“Right, yes, indeed,” I said.
“Oh, dear, Martin’s contagious,” Douglas said in a slightly offhand manner.
“Douglas,” Martin said warningly.
“Both of you shut up!” Carolyn yelled. When everybody was quiet, she sighed in a very I’m-pleased-with-myself manner. “Right. So what is it exactly you children wanted? Martin here tells me you can find us places to stay.”
“Firstly, not children, child. I am over 100 years old. But secondly, and less importantly, yes. Well, I can’t myself, but my friend can. We need to contact him. Do you have a phone?”
“A hundred?” Arthur asked, but Carolyn shushed him. “Yes, we have a phone right over here.”
Carolyn led me over to a phone and I called the Doctor’s number. It dialed and dialed. And dialed, and dialed… Finally, I got through.
“Hello?” The Doctor answered.
“Doctor!” I said, relieved.
“Wh-”
“No time.”
“There’s always time when I’m involved.”
I ignored him and said, “Please can you pick Brent and I up?”
“Are you not listening to me?”
“We’re on Mens Rea in 2637. “
“What? How did you get there?”
“Also - ”
“No, hang on a minute!”
“What?”
“What are you doing on Mens Rea? In 2637?!”
I sighed. “Waiting for you to pick us up and take our new friends somewhere they can get jobs and have food and places to stay.”
The Doctor groaned theatrically. “Fine. I’ll be there soon. Oh, where are you precisely?”
“Hang on.” I asked Carolyn the address and then passed it on to the Doctor. “See you later!” I said, and hung up. Turning to Martin, Carolyn, Douglas and Arthur, I said, “Pack your stuff!”
They hurried to obey.
