“Doctor,” I called, “Doctor, how do you plan to find out how ‘it’ knew?”

“I will ask Brent how he knew what happened and hope for the best.”

“No,” I told him.  He stopped suddenly and I almost ran into him.

He whirled around to face me.  “What did you say?”

“I said, ‘no’.  You can’t just walk in there and ask him what happened.  That’s too obvious and could alert potential outside forces of our knowledge.  We need to approach the problem cautiously.  Yes.  That’s what we need to do.  Be discrete.  Stealthy. Like… Like ninjas.  Yeah.  Ninjas are cool.”

The Doctor was silent for a few seconds.  “I’ve been doing this for hundreds of years, and here you are, it hasn’t even been one year, and you already think you can tell me what to do.”

“Yes, and how many times in all your hundreds of years has the ‘I’m-just-going-to-waltz-in-there-and-demand-to-know-exactly-what’s-going-on-and-you-will-tell-me’-” I paused here to take a breath, “’-without-any-qualms-what-so-ever’ thing work?  That was a long sentence.  Can we make it something shorter?  Like the I.J.G.T.W.I.T.A.D.T.K.E.W.G.O.A.Y.A.G.T.T.M.W.A.Q.W.S.E. Principal? No, that’s still too long, I think.”

He glared at me but said nothing.  I continued to stare at him, my expression blank and unchanging.  He cracked first and started to laugh.  I joined in as well.  Soon, we were both leaning on the walls of the TARDIS trying not to fall over.  Without success.  Eventually, we sobered up and composed ourselves.

“So,” the Doctor said.  “Onwards.”

“Indeed,” I replied.

We walked for a few more minutes before arriving at Brent’s door.  Like before, I opened the door without knocking.  The light was still on and Brent was still in his bed staring at the wall.

“Brent,” the Doctor began calmly.

“Doctor,” Brent said.  There was a sinister quality to his voice. Something wasn’t right here.  I mean, I suspected something was wrong before, but now I was sure.

“I know you’re upset,” the Doctor, I think, was unsure of how to approach the subject.  I decided to at least attempt to take over.

“Brent, I think what the Doctor’s trying to say is that if ever you need anyone to talk to, he’ll be there for you.” I nodded sincerely while giving my mini-speech.  It was, I think, very motivational.  Or something.

“Why would I need to do that?” Brent asked, looking at us as though we were idiots.  He actually did that.  I will be having words with him when this is over.

The Doctor looked slightly taken aback, both by Brent’s choice of words and the slight hostility of the tone he delivered them in.  “Oh, well, I dunno,” the Doctor recovered quickly, “Just if you were, say, worried about something, or you had something of importance to tell me…”

“Oh, Doctor, my old friend,” Brent said, getting up from his bed and smiling sinisterly.

Wait.

Old friend?  Since when are Brent and the Doctor old friends?  Or friends at all?

“If I ever needed your help, it would be because I wanted to kill you and I needed you in the right place at the right time.”

“I’m sorry,” I interjected, not sorry at all, “Have I missed something, or…?”

Brent swiveled towards me.  “Ah, Sarah.  You’re still here aren’t you?  Did you know, there’s nobody I’ve ever met that’s more annoying than you?”

“That’s only cos you can’t meet yourself,” I mumbled.  Feeble, I know.

“Oh ho, funny.  Funny, you are,” Brent said in a tone which suggested it really wasn’t funny at all.

“I try.”

“I’m finished talking to you now.”  Brent turned back to the Doctor.  Rude.  “Doctor, back to business.”

“Yes, what exactly are you?” the Doctor asked.

“I’m Brent.  A simple glance should tell you that this is indeed true.”

“I’m afraid I’ll have to correct you there.  You see, Brent isn’t nearly this intelligent.  I can understand the annoying… ness, but there’s no way Brent is that smart.  Also, Brent and I are not old friends.”

Brent raised his hands in mock-surrender.  “You caught me.  I am not, as you say, Brent.”

“Yes, but I already knew that.  WHO are you?”

“A while back, Brent made a deal with me.  He wanted to find the Doctor.  I told him that if he could track you down, I’d give him anything he wanted.  For a small, reasonable price.”

“What price?” The Doctor asked sharply.

“I’m getting to that.  Shut up and let me finish.  Now, where was I? Ah, yes.  So I told him that his good friend Sarah-”

“I am not his good friend,” I muttered.

“- Knew all about the Doctor, and if he waited long enough, he’d find both of you.  Naturally, as soon as he was out of sight, I sent the Doctor a message of sorts telling him that someone was waiting for Sarah at her house.”

“What?” I said, looking at the Doctor.  “You mean, after the Krillitanes, that’s how you knew Brent was at my house?”

“Shut up Sarah!  That’s what I just said not five seconds ago! Really, learn to listen.”

“Not the time,” the Doctor said warningly.  “Now, whoever you are, not-Brent, I have some questions for you.  Firstly, what was the ‘small price’; secondly, who are you, and thirdly, what the hell are you doing in my TARDIS?”

“I shall answer one of those questions.  Choose wisely.”

“You will answer all three.  I have a pretty good idea of what you are and that means if I destroy your vessel, you’ll be gone too, so don’t think you can tell me how to do things.  I run this ship and you. Will. Do. As. I. Say.”

“Ooh, scary.  Alright, I’ll answer your questions.  Sheesh.  Firstly, the small price was after he found you, I would… inhabit his mind and be in control.  Secondly, I am in your TARDIS because you let me in here and because I want to be here.  Thirdly, well.  You said you already know who I am, so you tell me.”

The Doctor was quiet as he stared at Brent – well, it wasn’t Brent anymore, was it?

“Yes, indeed, I have worked a few things out,” the Doctor began.  “I shall start with a list and then move on to more detailed explanations of each point.  One, I know who and what you are.  Two, I know how to get rid of you without harming anyone.  Three, I know what your favourite colour is.”

“What does my favourite colour have to do with this?”

“A lot.”

Brent gestured as if to say, “Enlighten me.”

“Right,” the Doctor said, and began pacing around the small bedroom.  “Firstly, I believe I said I know who and what you are, am I right?” He glanced at me and I nodded.  “You are clearly a Demonn.”
