Chapter 13:
I stare at him and Louis swallows before he continues his story.
"I know this sounds unreal and maybe you think that I'm lying but it is true. I'll prove it to you."
Not believing I furrow my eyebrows and nod my head to tell him to explain more. Even though my brain shouts at me that he is talking nonesense, some part of me can't help but think it's true or at least hope it's true.
"Okay, ask me a question only you and your boyfriend could know.", he says.
I hesitate, trying to think of something good and not to easy.
"What is my favourite colour and why?", I ask after a second.
He shakes his head. "Too easy. Your favourite colour is blue. Sapphire blue. Like my eyes. Ask something more difficult!"
He is right, my favourite colour really is blue and I do love his eyes. When I think about it now, I realise that he was even right saying that it is my favourite colour because of him. I actually expected him to say something along the lines 'because it's like the sea'.
"What is the most amazing band in the whole world?", I ask, thinking longer and picking something, I've never told anyone before.
Louis smiles slightly and answers without thinking: "You always say your favourite band is 'The Script' but actually for you the best band ever is 'The 1975'. That's something you never tell anyone because in your school were some people who hated this band and said bad things to all those who liked them, so you've kept it a secret forever and it took me days to finally figure it out."
My jaw drops and I look at him shocked. What he said was true, well at least with the bands and guys at school. As for the 'it took me days to find out' part, I don't know, but it seems so logical and somewhere deep inside me I know he is telling the truth.
"So.. you're saying.. that.. we were.. boyfriends?", I ask, more than a little confused and just to make sure.
He nods without any hesitance. Then he takes a deep breath and nearly whispers: "Yes, we were boyfriends. Actually you asked me to be yours when you were seventeen, me being nineteen. It was one the best days in my life."
His admission makes my heartbeat race a million times faster than usually. I don't say anything. Partially, because I can't force my mouth open and also because I promised Louis to not interrupt him.
"When we were in a relationship our bond just grew stronger with every day. Everything seemed to be perfect. It really was.", he goes on, his eyes glued to the mattress.
Sighing deeply, he adds: "Well, at least as long until you were asked if you could participate in a science experiment. They said that they only wanted the best - you were amazing at school - and you could work together with the best heads from all over the world. The only condition was no mobile phone and any kind of contact to the rest of the world until the project ended. We were told that they didn't exactly know when it was going to end but they thought it would last for about a year."
I look at him in disbelief and my gaze meets his when he looks up. I see directly into his blue eyes and once again I know it is the truth. Even though it seems too unreal to be true, it is.
A small tear escapes from his eyes and before I can think about it my fingers wipe it away softly. He freezes under my gentle touch and I'm so captivated by his blue orbs that I don't realise what I'm doing.
I run my fingers over his cheek and to the corner of his mouth, never breaking eye contact. He swallows hard. The little movement catapults me back and I notice what I am doing.
Quickly I place my hand in my lap and then ask the next best thing I can think of.
"Who is 'they'?"
Louis looks down again, probably because he wants to hide his reddened cheeks from me. Then he answers: "I'm not sure. They are all very intelligent - at least that's what everybody says - and when they met each other they founded an organisation. A science organisation. Their target was to make the world a better place and in the beginning there were regular updates on their works but after some time passed nobody heard much of them anymore. When they wrote a letter to you explaining why they want you to join their investigations, we all were really surprised. Hardly anyone believed that this group even existed anymore."
I nod shortly. That's quite a lot to take in and I'm not sure if I want to hear the rest now. It is just a bit too much and too unreal. But then again, I'm too curious to not hear everything. It's about my life after all.
"So, you are saying I went to work with some geniuses and then suddenly I wasn't here anymore?", I ask to see if I got it correct. Louis nods and contines speaking.
"Yes, you did go working with them. The last time I heard of you was when you stole a mobile phone fron one of the members of the science group. You called me and I could literally hear you panicking through the phone. You were ranting about some dangerous experiment and that you were not there to work with this organisation as we all thought but to be experienced with. They used you as their victim. I think it was part of the experiment to get you in the future and I also think that they don't know you are here right now. They would have never let you. Maybe your dad is like your guardian and they just want to keep you in the future. I really don't know, this would be a possible explanation but it could be completely wrong as well."
My jaw falls open when I hear Louis telling me everything he knows. I was a victim to a science organisation which used me as their experiment?
Louis has to be joking.
And it's a really good joke seeing as I nearly believed it. I start laughing but he never joins me, so I shut my mouth quickly.
"You are serious?"
