Not quite sure if I like or hate this chapter. This is basically the reason it's set before HoT. This book is pretty much an AU.

Kai leads them to the bounty. He closes the doors and windows and puts a pinch of something silver in front of each. He gently lays Nya down on the couch and sits down next to her. He runs a hand through his hair and sighs.

Jay starts, "Okay, Kai, the hell is going on?!"

"I'll explain in a minute. First, do you have the dolls?"

They all hold them up. Kai stands up and gestures at the table. They set the dolls down. Then they all stare. They're people, made with cloth with stitched-on faces. They look strange...

"Like voodoo dolls..." Morro says in awe.

"Kai, my database recognizes genetic material in these dolls. They all contain  human hair. The people themselves are all teenagers right now. What's going on?" Asks Zane, leaning back into Cole.

"I don't really know where I should begin..."

"Then start at the beginning." Says Jay, sitting on Nya's other side and running a finger through her hair. "I think we deserve to know what happened to you two."

Kai sighs. "Fine. I know I'm going to regret this.

"When we were kids, as you probably know, we... lost our parents."

"Yeah, they disappeared. You've told us that before."

"That's the problem. They didn't disappear. When I was seven, I went to school as normal. Nya was five. She was too young to start school, so she stayed home with our mom and dad. I still don't really know what happened. But when I got home, My parents were lying on the ground with silver bullets through their chests. It was bloody to say the least."

Everyone gapes at him.

Skylor turns and hugs him. "Baby..."

Kai looks over at Nya's sleeping form. "She saw everything from the pantry. Any human being would have lost their mind. Especially at such a young age. She was only five..."

"So she isn't human?" Asks Morro in horror.

"Oh, she is. Or at least partially. But I think I get it now. One of our parents was a demon. They left the Order. They ran away to Ignacia, to a place where they thought they wouldn't be found. But they were. Someone learned the truth. A close friend, maybe even a relative. Probably scared them to death. So what do scared people do? They panic. They fight. They assume it's kill or be killed. So they were shot. Nya saw it all."

"Did your parents hurt anyone?" Lloyd asks.

"No. That's what made it so shocking," Kai stood up and stretched, back cracking loudly. "We should be okay for now. We should get some sleep. Long day tomorrow."

"Kai," Skylor asks quietly, almost as if she's afraid to know, "Are you human?"

Kai shrugs, then plasters on his usual smirk.

"Wouldn't you like to know."

Then he saunters upstairs.

"Dayumn," says Morro, "Guy's got you!"

Skylor glares at him.

Kai falls back against the counter, tears pricking his eyes. Skylor was afraid. Now that he thought about it, almost everyone seemed nervous around him.

The façade he had built up was slowly crumbling. He knew that.

Kai feels a tear drip down his face as he tries to center himself.

"Why? Why did you even have to have kids? If we have to live hell, why did you even have us?"

He looks at his wrist. Risk it?

"No. I have to be strong. For you and me, Nya. I have to stay calm a-and act n-no-normal and t-try to get p-past this. I can't g-go crazy."

He counts slowly to twelve, slowing his breathing.

"What is it Jay always says? Positive thinking? I really need to learn how he does it."

In the guest room, Skylor stares at the ceiling. She knows it now. She's in a lot of trouble.

"Kai... Why does it have to be so hard to love you?"

A million thoughts go through her head. She's probably trapped here. They just started their relationship. Does she want to risk running?

"I think I hate you," Skylor mutters. "Why do I love you enough to risk everything?"

She drifts off into what she hopes will be a dreamless sleep.

Jay sits on the couch, watching the child sleep. She has a round, slightly hollow face, with large eyes and a light sprinkling of freckles. Her hair is a very dark brown, not quite the black color or her teenage self. It's also slightly longer. She doesn't have bangs. But that's not what he's focused on. The dolls. The lies. The demons. He doesn't understand it. She told him they weren't keeping secrets.

"I guess you kept the fact that you were keeping secrets a secret," he said, genuinely upset. "Don't worry, I kept my promise. Like I always do. Like I always will. But I guess you w-won't."

His blue eyes glisten with tears as he slumps forward, unable to control it anymore. He sleeps on the floor that night, his body convulsing with broken sobs.

That night, everything is quiet inside. But outside, figures watch the boat bob on the water. They know it's only a matter of time before someone slips up. They need to cleanse the world of these people. They need to kill everyone.
