To say Luna was paranoid would be an understatement. She would jump when the wind rustled the leaves or when Ryland accidentally stepped on a stick. Luna was clung tightly to Ryland's arm, her other hand holding her now slightly shaky flashlight.
"Come on, why are you so scared? You have me," Ryland whispered to Luna, making her jump at the sudden start of a conversation.
"You know how I feel about the dark and that isn't much reassurance, Ryland," Luna whispered back, trying to mask her fear with anger.
"Well-" Ryland started to say something when he all of a sudden stopped short and sniffed the air.
"What?" Luna questioned, fear flooding her voice when she felt Ryland stop.
"She should be right around here," Ryland mumbled shaking his head so that the curls on his head bounced a little.
The two friends then poked around a little further until they found the classic yellow police tape that read "DO NOT CROSS" and the body in the middle.
Luna's eyes widened before she turned her head away and buried into Ryland's side, feeling squeamish. Ryland sensed her lack of comfort and rested a comforting hand on her head.
The girl's body was laying at an awkward angle, her limbs positioned in all directions. Her top was ripped by the collar, almost exposing her undergarments and her decolletage, neck, and wrists were heavily masked in blood. The blood, however, was smeared all over her body messily coating her face and clothes as well. The scariest part was how her head was positioned. It was laying at an unnatural angle just like the rest of her body, but her eyes were still open and her mouth still seemed fixated into a scream of terror.
"I'm going to go closer, stay here, and keep your eyes closed," Ryland said, unraveling himself from Luna who now had tears brimming her eyes. She nodded feverishly, her eyes now screwed shut and covered with her hand for extra protection.
Ryland went under the police tape and sniffed the air. All he smelt was blood and the underlying stench of death radiating from off of Sam's body, no scent of any other packs, which sent a wave of relief through him. He bent down next to the body and looked at where the blood was mostly concentrated on her wrists and neck. Ryland focussed on her wrist and was able to identify that there were two holes in her skin.
He backed up as a response. This wasn't an animal attack or another pack attack. He knew exactly what this was and he felt immediate regret stab him for forcing Luna to come with him. Ryland removed himself from under the police tape and back to where Luna stood.
"Hey, you can uncover your eyes now, it's just me," Ryland said gently, almost as if he was speaking to a child.
Luna slowly removed her hand from her eyes and opened them. Her eyes were wet with tears and her cheeks were slightly damp as well.
"I'm sorry for dragging you with me, let's just go," Ryland said, grabbing Luna's hand.
"Well, what kind of attack was it? You can't just drag me here and not tell me." Luna whispered, leaning her head on Ryland's arm as they turned away from the crime scene to walk out of the woods.
"Well, I guess it was kind of a murder, there was no definite scent," Ryland said, watering down the truth.
"Was it supernatural?" Luna asked, her face slightly squished as she was pressed into Ryland's arm to seek comfort.
Ryland didn't respond. He suddenly stopped again, a familiar scent filling his nose.
"Get behind me," Ryland demanded, he was all of a sudden on high alert, his eyes flashing amber.
