Mornings
MAY
Hello, I'm May Peters. I live in the so called developed areas of my under developed country. I live with my mum and my pet dog Sasha. I have never met my dad before and mum has told me very little about him. All I know is that he is a lawyer too like my mum.
Well.. I would say I have a close relationship with my mum but that would be lying.
Every morning I wake up to a " May! Get up or else you'll be late for school. Before you leave you know you have to make your breakfast and pack your own lunch. I won't do that for you, I'm not your maid. When you get back from school you will have to do...... (An endless list of chores) " If I don't wake up within exactly five minutes, I will hear another "Maylanda Samantha Monica Peters I said... " Just when I hear my full name I know that the next thing won't be good for the both of us so I have to do myself a favour and get up. That is the morning life of an African child. You live in a dictatorship with your parents. I say this because I never experienced life with my American dad.
Waking up is not a problem, the things I have to do after are. After I take a shower, wear my school uniform and pack my back pack, I have to head to the kitchen to make my breakfast which happens to be my mum's breakfast. I have to make two shares of breakfast and pack two shares of lunch. Only heaven knows what my mum does in the morning to keep her very busy that I have to do everything for her.
Even though I feel this way about being her personal maid, I respect myself as not to say a single word as this would create problems in this home.
I do all I'm supposed to do in my usual quiet manner and wait for her to finish whatever she's doing so that she can drop me off at school. If by mistake I try to let her know that I am running late, she yells "You know the way to your school, don't you? Why don't you get on a bus or better still walk there if you think I am wasting your precious time little miss! "
I have no option but to wait and think of a story to tell my teachers as to why I am late that day.
