"Jai, what the hell is that?" Ryon asked me.
I looked up from my phone to see her point across the street.
We were currently sitting in a Dunkin Donuts on this boring Sunday afternoon. They were having a genius fucking deal with buy one get one free iced coffees and we were weak, weak bitches.
Across the street however, were a couple of guys at the park with guitars. I picked up my glasses from the table and put them on to get a better look.
The two blonds had the guitars and a dark haired boy sat with them and they looked like they could be singing. I squinted a little bit and then sighed, taking off my glasses.
Ryon was watching me expectantly, her own glasses perched on her nose and her fluffy hair pulled up into a bun. She was holding her phone in her hand and was looking between me and the boys across the street.
"Are they really?" She asked.
I nodded my head, "Yes, they are really."
"What the hell, and they didn't tell us?" She scoffed, clearly offended with our friends' lack of courtesy.
I put my glasses into my drawstring bag and got up from my chair, "Let's go bother them."
We both gathered up our stuff and threw away our napkins and trash before I headed over to order two more iced coffees. Thank God for drink carriers.
We left Dunkin and made our way to the cross walk because neither of us had a death wish. Let's be real, if we were a lot more ballsy then we would have risked getting hit by a car in order to cross the street. However, we both valued our well being much more than taking a deadly shortcut.
In the approaching spring, it was still cool enough to need something to cover up with. I had on my favorite long sleeved cardigan and Ryon was sporting a simple Gold Coast sweatshirt.
"I am so gonna kill them," she mumbled as we crossed the street and headed down the sidewalk.
"Well, at least kill whoever survives the coffee war," I joked.
"You are wasting your money on them, I swear," she told me. "The only time they love you is when you have food."
"I like sharing, okay?" I gave her a look.
She rolled her eyes and adjusted her bag strap. She pulled out her phone and I glanced over to see her opening her camera and pushing the record button as we got close. She began talking in a poor imitation of Steve Irwin.
"And you see right here there are three losers who are desperately trying to attract a mate by pretending to be cool with musical instruments and singing to old pop punk music that literally no one gives a shit about."
Michael stopped strumming and stared at her with clear annoyance as she moved around them.
"Oh, this one's a grumpy one today," she kept going.
Luke and Calum were already laughing and I stood there smiling, not believing my friend's antics. Ryon stopped shortly and put her phone away, "Sup bitch tit."
Michael just gestured to the three of them and I stepped closer.
"Ladies and Gentlemen step right up for I have only two iced coffees from Dunkin!" I announced, holding up the drink carrier.
"Dibs!" Michael screeched, throwing his hand towards me.
I laughed and handed him one before looking at Luke and Calum, "Who wants it?"
"I do!" They both shouted in unison.
I shook my head, "You're gonna have to fight for it."
They looked at each other before Calum shoved Luke back and jumped to his feet. Luke making a weak attempt to trip him before Calum snatched the drink from the carrier.
"Aw what!" Luke exclaimed. "You usually bring enough for all of us."
"It was buy one get one free and I didn't feel like spending more money," I answered.
Michael laughed at him and Luke flipped him off. The blond with a coffee faked surprised and dramatically slapped his hand against his chest. "Luke Robert Hemmings what would your mother think?"
We all laughed and Luke blushed a little.
"Here, you can have the last of mine," I offered him the clear cup that was still half full.
"Are you sure?" He asked shyly, looking up at me with those big blue eyes.
Oh man, that was the cutest fucking thing ever.
"Yeah, here," I handed it to him.
"Thanks Jai," he took it and sipped from the straw that my mouth had just been on.
My heart hurt a little.
Here's the truth, I like Luke, like a hell of a fucking lot. I haven't told anyone about it either, not even Ryon, and she's my partner in crime. I would go into detail of all the little, tiny, insignificant things about the blue eyed blond that drew me to him and let my heart get lost in the sea of his song but that's just too cheesy.
"You guys wanna stay for a bit?" Calum asked.
I nodded and sat down between Michael and Luke and Ryon sat next to Calum like she always did. Sometimes, I think that maybe they would be really cute together. They kind of reminded me of an iced coffee.
Calum would be the coffee, all dark and heavy and strong -even though he's more like a little brown noodle right now-. Ryon would be the creamer and milk, sweet and cool and creating beautiful swirls of light as they blended together and became something entirely new.
That sounds weird, doesn't it?
Ryon really likes coffee.
"Yeah, Mikey's parents are gonna let me come over later," I explained.
"Don't call me Mikey," Michael whined.
"Whatever," I replied.
"Why are you going over to Mike's?" Calum asked.
Everyone was looking at me now and for some reason heat rushed to my cheeks, "We're gonna hang out and play toon town."
"Without me?!" Ryon exclaimed. "What the hell?! Toon town was our game!!"
"Yeah, but Mikey just started playing it and so I gotta help him level up," I answered.
"No, no no no no no no," Ryon shook her head. "Toon town is our game and you cannot violate the sacredness of it like that."
"Oh whatever," Michael laughed. "I'll be able to play with you guys and we can fight cogs together."
"Piss off," Ryon replied, failing to hide her smile.
"Anyways," Luke began, trying to change the subject. "Anyone else ready for high school?"
"Fuck no," I answered.
"No," Calum shook his head.
"I'm dying," Ryon added.
"Same," Michael replied.
Luke nodded his head, "Glad to know we're all on the same page."
