My eyes shot open and I gasped for air, my hands instinctively trying to grasp something. Gripping what felt like a wooden box, I pulled myself up. I looked around, barely seeing the shapes of boxes and what seemed like bags of food. I walked over to one of the walls, only to realise that it was actually a cage. I was in a cage. I started panicking, my breathing still unsteady from my brutal awakening.
"Hello? Somebody help me!" I screamed, only to be answered by my own echo. Suddenly, a loud thud shook the whole cage, making me lose my balance and fall on my hands and knees. The cage started moving upwards, throwing me completely on the ground. I managed to look up only to realise that I was going dangerously fast towards a set of doors.
"HELP ME!" I shouted one last time before hiding my head in my hands, lying flat on the bottom of the cage, waiting for the fatal crash. I shut my eyes just as the cage came to a stop. After a few seconds of silence, I looked up, wondering how I was not dead. I managed to sit myself down, my back on a box, trying to steady my breathing. My throat was burning from all the screaming, and my whole body was sore from being so tensed, even for such a short period of time. I pulled my legs up, hugging my knees for comfort.
Just as I was calming down a little, I heard what sounded like footsteps on metal coming from over me. I looked up and noticed a thin line of light, along with moving shadows. I was about to ask what was going on when one of the doors was lifted and sunlight hit my eyes with violence. I squinted, blocking the light with my hand. I could feel the warmth from the sun on my skin as my eyes tried to adjust to the sudden light.
A ton of voices started to speak at the same time.
"What does he look like?"
"Is he scared?"
"How old is he?"
"Slim it, Slintheads!" A lower voice said, and the others became quiet. "Newt, get down there," the voice continued, and whoever it was, they sounded concerned - but in control.
The cage suddenly shook as someone jumped down in the cage, next to me. I lowered my hand to get a better view at them. It was a blond boy, and he looked young, not older than 18. I might've called him cute, if I hadn't been terrified and he hadn't been staring at me with his mouth slightly opened, a frown on his face.
"You're a bloody girl," he whispered, and I immediately noticed his thick accent. I frowned too, but did not dare to answer. I could feel my heart beath increasing again, starting to wonder what he would do with me. I held his glare for a second, before he looked up.
"Alby! The Greenie is a girl!" he shouted, and chatter erupted once again.
"Did you say a girl?"
"That's not possible!"
"Why would they send a girl?"
"Why do you think, Shuckface? Did they wipe that from your mind, too?"
"I said slim it!" the lower voice barked, and the other voices lowered down again. I looked up and saw a big shadow, standing at the edge of the cage. "Take her out, Newt. A Greenie is a Greenie," the boy I assumed was Alby said, and the blond one in the cage looked down at me. He smiled, offering me his hand.
"Well, Greenie, welcome to the Glade."
