I had just finished cutting Sayuri's hair and was looking over my work. I thought I'd done pretty well. It was a bit of a pity that I'd had to cut it- it must have been at least past her elbows before. I smoothed down the slightly messy, black bob she now had when I stiffened. Three shinobi? I wondered. I could sense them just outside our window and I silently cursed myself for being careless enough to allow them to get this close. Instinctively, I reached for my kunai knife, holding it ready to strike when I remembered Sayuri. Even though I had never put much effort into hiding it, I had initially planned on keeping the fact I was a ninja a secret from her.
"K-Kakashi?" She asked nervously as she saw me draw my blade. I turned her to face me and signaled for her to be quiet and stay where she was. I also tried to brief her on the fact that we were about to be attacked by three shinobi, but judging by her expression, she didn't understand. Never mind, I thought. As long as she keeps her head down she's not in any danger.
Cautiously, I snuck my way to the window and opened it quickly, hoping to catch a glimpse of my enemies, but all I saw was darkness... and a glint of metal. The kunai knife pierced the log I had substituted myself with harmlessly. Phew, once again the substitution jutsu saves my life.
"Kakashi!!" Sayuri cried, scrambling towards the smoke cloud I had used to cover my escape. She stopped suddenly as the smoke cleared and revealed the log, an expression of utter confusion on her face. She must have honestly thought I was dead. Poor child.
I'll end this quickly, I decided. I reached for my weapon pouch, but it was gone. Damn, I left it in our room... Never mind.
I focused on the shinobi nearest me. None of them knew where I was hiding, so I measured their abilities to be no higher than Chunin-level. Before any of his comrades could react, I had knocked out one of them. As I raced towards the other two, they threw shuriken and kunai knives at me. I noted that their aim wasn't bad, but their throws were too predictable. I managed to get close to them with no problem and caught two shuriken in mid-air, throwing them back at their owners. Both of the targets thudded to the ground with groans. I kneeled next to them to inspect their forehead protectors and found they were marked with four vertical lines. "Amegakure, huh?" I muttered, recognising the sign of the Village Hidden in the Rain. The shinobi themselves looked hardly old enough to be out on a mission without supervision, especially one such as this. "Get lost," I told them before climbing through the window back into our room. I wasn't in the mood to kill them.
As soon as I was inside, Sayuri tackled me with a hug. Her head barely reached my elbow, so I felt pretty awkward hugging her back. She was sobbing quietly and soon I could feel her tears through my shirt. To be honest, I was quite touched by how much she cared. I stroked her head gently. "Umm... I'm fine, so there's no need to cry." I said awkwardly while doing so. "I substituted myself with that log. Don't worry, I'm alright. I'm fine."
Sayuri looked up at me, her eyes still filled with tears. "You could have told me you were gonna do that." She sniffed.
"I'm sorry," I smiled apologetically, then took a tissue from my pocket and handed it to her. She blew her nose a couple of times. "There, that's better. It's getting a little late, so how about we go to bed?"
Sayuri nodded reluctantly, still sniffling slightly. The next day we started our journey home again. Sayuri had changed into the clothes I'd bought her the day before. I thought they suited her well- a sleeveless, green jumper that went past her knees, black leggings, a red scarf and a pair of sandals. Sayuri spent most of our time on the road riding on my back, but I didn't really mind- she weighed next to nothing anyways. Once we got back to the tent Sayuri turned on me.
"You're a ninja, right?" She asked. Her eyes gleamed triumphantly as I nodded in reply. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't tell you because..." I sighed. "Because from what I heard in your story, your parents were killed by ninjas. I didn't want to alarm you." I was silently praying Sayuri wouldn't start crying from the mention of her dead parents and was relieved to see her eyes remain dry.
